Default starter staying engaged after flexplate swap

Changed transmissions from a th350 to a glide. While trans was out I put on a Hughes sfi flex plate. Now the starter Bendix stays out for 3-4 seconds after the car is cranked.

What can I check?

No it still does it. What kind of flex plate are you using?

It's possible that you may need to shim the starter.

UPDATE: this is the flexplate I have.
the one that everybody recommends from Summit.

I have tried shimming. I had about .120 of shims and it still does it.

I'm thinking of trying the dished flexplate that came with my 5.3.
Can I use the spacer, that came with the A270 flexplate, in back (toward the trans) of the factory dished flexplate?
Or do I need to purchase the adapter hub for my turbo 400?

How do you have it wired.

Also the Hughes flexplate I bought was bent out of the package.

I'm using a ford solenoid on the firewall.
Jumper wire on the starter from large battery terminal to solenoid switch terminal.

My new engine is almost ready and I'm gonna try a different flex plate when it goes in

I had to change the 6.0 flexplate in my 08 van because it cracked.
I am going to pull the van starter and try it in my 5.3.
If it still hangs up, it has to be the A270 flexplate causing the problem.

The 5.3 is a 2001. I'm going to first check and make sure the 08 van starter is compatible.

I just checked advance auto parts site and it list two different part numbers for the different year starters.
Anybody know if my 08 6.0 starter will work in a 01 5.3?

I tried 2 new starters since mine was under warranty. Tried shimming too. Also new solenoid. No luck. I've just dealt with it since mine's a track only car.

Keep us updated, hope you figure it out

The 12v cable from the battery must go straight to the starter. Then run a signal wire from the Ford solenoid to the solenoid on the starter. A jumper on the starter will cause it to hang up in the flexplate.

I found this...
http://www.s10racer.com/board/showthread.php?t=282

it states the late model starters will stay engaged using the jumper wire at the starter.
Like I have.

Gray86,
thanks for the tip.
