Default bought hawk balancer tool have questions

hey guys so im getting ready to put the balancer on the z after my heads and cam swap but i have some questions. so obviously i use the tool to pull the balancer back on but once i do that do i just have to put my new bolt it and torque it to spec? im asking cause im reading that after you seat the pulley you have to insert the old bolt and torque it to 240 then put the new bolt in?? im so confused on this whole thing everyone keeps telling me to not reuse the old bolt for anything but im seeing gm repair manuals mentioning the balancer tool THEN torqing it down with the old bolt to 240. can someone just clarify this whole thing for me and give me a step by step on wtf i have to do i would really appreciate it.

Use the tool to get the balancer on. If you are using a ARP bolt, just torque it to spec.

If you are using the GM TTY bolt, use the old bolt to seat it, remove it and install the new TTY.

so its ok to torque the old bolt to 240 ft lbs AFTER i seat the pulley with the tool, then take it out and put my new bolt in?

Well yeah...You torque the bolt to ensure the pulley is on all the way. You really don't "Seat" the pulley with the tool, you install it...Are you using an ARP bolt or the GM TTY? LIke I said, if you are using an ARP bolt, torque it once and be done with it.

What is your concern here?

I think his concern is that he's torquing the old non reuse able bolt to 240. Which really isn't a problem as its plenty strong. Op just follow the gm directions if your using an original bolt. You'll be fine.

I did it that way my first time and after that ati told me a trick and I don't ever torque the old bolt down anymore. Using a propane or map torch heat the BOTTOM of the pulley hub for a few mins then with oven mits just install it into the crank. It will literally fall on and you won't need to install the old bolt as you will feel the pulley bottom out on the crank. Then just follow the directions for the new bolt. If you don't have a torch 30 mins in a 225 degree oven works also.

I used the Hawk tool but did not torque it -- rather, I simply pushed it onto the snout until it [the snout] was recessed about 1/8"-3/16". The point, from what I can tell, to torquing is that is approximately the best alignment for the pulley with the accessories. I don't have a torque wrench that goes nearly that high, so that's why I did what I did.

After I had it on where I wanted it, I followed the instructions to put the new TTY bolt in (the 120* or whatever it was).

You can see a picture of what I'm referring to here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/17235917-post29.html

Breaking a bolt is a possibility with any fastener. Don't let that scare you...
