welding an cracked oil pan?

welding an cracked oil pan? in the final stages of putting my motor together and not paying attention i didnt have the timing cover lined up properly with the oil pan rail.
long story short. torquing down the pan . it when POP
pan just came back from powder coat so its nice and clean .
would welding a hairline crack and then getting the mounting surface be a sound repair. i am about 98% sure onces the rail is true again everything would be fine. and it will save me a ton of $$ GTO pans arent cheap

cool ill let you know im goin to talk to a welder tomorrow morning about it. im sure that it can be fixed and be just as structurally sound as before it just comes down to cost

good to hear!! just sucks it came back from powder coat few days ago.. now thats getting messed up i doubt i fix the coating just cuz it shouldnt be able to be seen
That sucks! Let us know how it turns out. I broke an oil pan bolt, the real long one at the back right side of the engine. That thing just snapped during normal tightening! That's not the kind of noise you ever want to hear, but once I thought it over I figured I'd just chance it to see if it ever leaked. 7 years later and not a drop!

The key is knowing a master welder! A family friend of my fiance fixed mine, same thing with the timing cover not being flush. He said normally his fee is an hour minimum and it was some ridiculous price for cast aluminum work, like $100+!
The key is aligning the timing cover obviously, but a **** ton of RTV doesn't hurt when you're placing the gasket
The procedure calls for some at the corners, I just added a bit more to make the transition smoother, no problems with torquing.

if i had a welder i would do it myself, i have a fair share of welding under my belt but ive never brought myself to buying one.. even though i have considered it many times..
anyway got it welded cost me 100bucks and trashed my powdercoat of course. welds look good and should do the job..

Good welder can fix it. Weld both side it should be fine. I popped a huge gash in my oil pan on my fbody with a jack. And you damn near have to pull the motor to remove it. I just acetoned the surface sanded it down with fine grit sand paper and layed down like 10 layers of high temp Jb weld, and it held up since no leaks. I'm going to pull the motor this winter to swap the oil pan.
