Referring to the "Giving it gas" to start it. I may be getting too much fuel and thats why you have to "give it gas". When you push that pedal you are actually allowing the needed oxygen in for the excess fuel to burn.

The excess fuel could be fouling the plugs and O2's.

thats my thoughts.

I'd throw a vacuum gauge on there to see what you're vacuum is. Gotta find out why he said you had a major vacuum leak.
