Default cutout questions

I currently am running a 2 1/2in off road y pipe with two cutouts. I've heard alot of rumors about cutouts on automatics. Do the cutouts slow you down, and how do they effect gas mileage. My neighbor with an 00 SS M6 went from a 13.7 to a 14.2 with his dual cutouts, he actually ran better with full exhaust. Do cutouts help top end or low end? I also heard something that you use more gas when running cutouts, with gas prices now that really conserns me. Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

I have never run my car with full exhaust, actally my car has only been to the track 2 times for a total of 4 runs. I don't plan on going back to the track until I get some sticky tires....I don't know when that will be.

cutouts do not slow you down nor do they affect gas mileage. you will lose a little torque down low but make up for it and then some in the higher rpm's and the faster you go. and anything is better then a flowmaster muffler

At the very worst a cut out (or two) will show no gains (rare), in most cases they never cost you ET or trap speed.
Fuel economy should only be better (or at worst the same) because you're bypassing a restriction in flow.
I think my cut out helped a lot.

The ls1 is known to like a little backpressure. One cutout on the I pipe usually helps but if you put two on with no cat you could probably lose et an horsepower I've seen setups like that lose power when the cutouts were open on the dyno. I dont know why but the ls1's like some backpressure.

I have also seen slp techs talk about the backpressure and say not to use more than one cutout and dont use them at all if you go w/ an ORY.

so then what r u saying. wouldnt one cutout on they y pipe give more backpressure to the far cylender bank? idk it just sounds weird to have one cutout on a v-8

It wouldn't be one cut out off of just one header/exhaust manifold, it goes in the I pipe (or futher back) AFTER the two headers/Y pipe (ie: two cylinder banks) have met already.

I have a Borla and they say why do a cutout because you essentially already have a cutout with the Borla, but its at the muffler. Any dyno numbers with a y-pipe cutout and wide open Borla?

I saw no difference down low and maybe 10lb-ft
at the top end in Delivered Torque PID data.
With a converter you should not be low enough
in the RPM band to see the low-end torque
improvement that backpressure might produce.

If the cutout is close enough to the O2s that
fresh air reversion occurs, though, that would
be a mistake. This is pretty much impossible
with stock logs but with headers it's something
that could happen on a dual cutout scheme,
too near the collectors.

When I bought the ORY with 2 cuouts from a good friend of mine, I was under the impression that I would see significant horsepower gain and a little bit better fuel economy. The more I read on this board, the more opinons on cutouts I find. With my experience so far, my friends assurance is correct.

The thing is, when I got y-pipe I seldom went to WOT because it is so much louder than I was used to. I felt like had a better throttle response, but i'm not sure. It could be that I felt like I was going faster because of the noise. I think it may be the reason I saw better fuel economy was because I wasn't at WOT all the time like I used to, and not because of the cutouts.

If someone knows for sure that I need more backpressure, I will definately try it out to see for myself by capping the cutouts.

Griswold is exactly right -- we have spent many $$$$ on the dyno to prove it. Check us out -- you how have a choice of what cutout to buy.
