Default What lube for starter bendix shaft?

Hello, all. I have a 2000 WS6 (M6) with an intermittent starter problem. The car cranks very well, fires right up strong every time. The problem is about 1/3 of the time the starter will not disengage from the flywheel. As a starting point, I’m going to grease/lube the bendix/gear shaft hoping this will allow the starter to disengage. I’ve done a lot of searching, but haven’t found specifically what lube to use. From what I can find it should be a light lubricant. Can I use silicone spray? Would something else work better?

If I have time I’m going to pull the starter this weekend and try this fix, but am not sure exactly what to use. Any thoughts?

Welcome to LS1tech!

I suspect the starter is just a bit too close to the flexplate.

Thanks for the replies. This is the original starter and the problem just started happening within the last few weeks. The starter has never been off the car, so i don't know that it's too close to the flywheel. it may be time for a new one, but i want to get a little extra life out of her by trying to grease the bendix shaft. anyone have any thoughts on what lubricant to use?

Well... I think the starter died this morning. I cranked it up and headed to work this morning and the starter stuck again. I reved it slightly and it disengaged. I got to work and parked it up. Later this morning I went to crank it up to head out somewhere and got nothing. No click, no sounds, no nothing. I have power to everything else... power windows, dash, radio, a/c. Just no noise whatsoever from the starter.

It might be the clutch ignition switch, but with all of the problems I've had with the starter I think it may have just died.

What does everyone think? Time for a new starter?

Quick test.. If you tap on the starter with a small hammer (while someone else has key turned, clutch in) and the car starts.... Replace starter

Obviously be safe when doing this

Make sure you get a starter with the newer bracket, not the original short on one side bracket. You'll also need a second long starter bolt.

Thanks for the replies. I'll need to find a starter with the new brackets then and another longer bolt. Everywhere I look only shows me the old style mounting bracket.

In another thread, a member posted good results with a Quality Built 6492SN starter. Do an internet search for it.

The long starter bolt can be had from Dorman, 678-004.1 OR 72181, both available at AutoZone. The original GM part number for the long bolt is 12561387.
