Default LS1 alternative knock sensor location

Hello,
I have a LS1B 0411 PCM.
I have LS1 block with no knock sensor valley plate.
Has anyone mounted knock sensors on side of the block like the LS2's and do they work ok??
Regards
Gavin

It's not a LS1 or a LQ series iron block truck motor if it doesn't have knock sensor provisions in the valley cover. It will be a newer 6.0, 6.2, 7.0 etc.

Now be warned a 05,06 gto 6.0 is the bastard child. It had a 6.0 with 24X crank and 1X cam sensors that will work with the 411 PCM but used knocks mounted on the side of the block on the drivers and passenger side that worked with the newer more modern pcm systems that morphed into the 58X,4x systems used in 07 to present gm vehicles. You still have to drill the block if it's a LS2 for knocks and use the cam and knock sensor extension harness'

If it's a newer motor late 07 and all 08 up there is more to it than knock sensors. They will have a different crank and cam sensor reluctors 58X crank and 4X cam than the older engines. The newer 58x, 4x reluctors are not compatible with the 411 PCM without either changing the crank and cam reluctors to the older style or running the lingenfelter conversion module. This module allows the newer motors to talk to the older 411 pcm but they have their own drawbacks also. Mostly long crank time because the module has to process the signal it sees then convert it and send it out to the pcm. The early modules were also known to be flakey.

If the motor you have has all of the sensors installed in it then look at the crank sensor on the passenger side of the block above the starter if it is gray then it's a 58x new style motor and reluctor. If it's black its a 24X reluctor

As far as the knock sensors you need to use the LS old style knock sensors and then drill the block on the driver and passenger side. You will need a knock sensor extension harness and a cam sensor extension harness racetronix has these.

Use the search feature here you will find tons of information on it.

Default Knox Sensors LS1 block 2002 Suburban

I am installing a 2002 Suburban truck motor , LS1, into my 67 camaro. The engine presently has two knock sensors installed into it, what do I do how do I upgrade? From what I have seen, the new sales pitch is Valley plate with no holes for knock sensors.

There is no "upgrade". Moving the knock sensors just relocates them.
Nothing is improved or upgraded by doing so
The intake manifold hides them anyway, so no point in relocating

The people who remove them with a flat Valley Cover tend to have Carb Intakes and there's no reason to run a Knock Sensor since the only electronics are for spark if running a Carb. Some run an EFI Throttle Body on such Intake for looks, so they relocate the Knock Sensors.

All Gen III LS Blocks have the bosses for the Knock Sensors in the Valley, regardless of a flat cover on it or not. If going with an EFI setup and the common Intake that covers the Valley, run them in stock location.

Yes, you can either drill out and thread larger a vacant block side bung to fit the ls1 knock sensor, or turn down and rethread the stud on the sensor to fit the bung. Don’t be a dumbass and drill all the way through the block.

you’ll need an extension harness

you have to run the ls1 style sensors still, the newer ones are incompatible with the older ecu.

yes, there is an option in hptuners to select the newer style sensor on the older ecu, it still doesn’t work. If I’m wrong here, someone else will be along to gladly describe how to do it, but I’ve never been able to get it to work.
