Has anyone ever broken a cat in less than 1000 miles??
I'm just wondering..... I know I can't be the first person to break a cat with less than 1000 miles.
Was driving home the other night and started hearing this awful knocking sound. Was worried it might be something serious so next day we jacked it up and listened and it's the cat.
The rear part of it is broken and was rattling around making all kinds of ruckus.

OOPS
sorry guys forgot to resize
Well I don't know what a cat is made of but there is definately something in there rattling around and making a hell of a lot of noise.
I guess honeycomb sounds right???
How common is this. They were installed 5/9/04 and have less than 1k miles??
I guess it's just a fluke. They're Carsound cats that came with my QTP'S
I've already spoken to Barry and he's baffled cause he's never had a cat do that before but he's taking care of me (great guy and top notch products and service) can't blame him for the cat since he didn't make it but he's taking care of things anyways

or if you dont need them for emissions take a long screw driver or something and break up the honeycomb until it comes out so it doenst rattle. inside the cat theres two honeycomb layers, the rear one, which yours cam loose, and a front one.

Well the reason I got the catted y pipe was to keep the rasp and interior noise level down with my LT's and GMMG.
Like I said I talked to Barry @ QTP and he's going to take care of me

it took me 77 miles after my lt install to bust two magnaflow cats. completely shattered the wire screen. you could hear the broken peices rattlign around inside the cat. Luckily the rear screens on both did not give way and it caught the shrapnel. magnaflow sent me a full refund as i told them i didnt want new ones, cause the car jsut sounded too damn good without them in lol.

One of my cats (Magnaflow 94109) broke up within a couple hundred miles of getting my Y pipe done. I heard a rattling sound from under the car when driving for a couple days. The rattle went away and then my SES light for the cats came on. After checking several things, I decided to pull the pipe off and found that the driver's side cat was totally gone. Apparently, the shop that did my Y pipe had dented the body of the cat to gain a little clearance (they didn't even need the clearance where they dented it). The dent in the cat must have cracked the honeycomb material, which then propagated through the whole thing and broke everything apart.

I had the same problem. I also have the QTP catted Y-pipe and within a few thousand miles after getting them installed I had the rattling noise. It turned out to be the passenger cat. QTP sent me another one and said it was probably because I was running to rich that it failed. The ended up just sending me the cat so I had to take the piece of the Y-pipe to and exhaust shop and get them to take off the old cat and weld on the new. I installed the y-pipe again. Yesterday, about 2 weeks later, I heard a rattling coming from my drivers side cat. I think I am just going to gutt the cats and be done with it. Can I really be running that rich after just headers to destroy 2 cats in a few thousand miles? DO you guys think it will sound good with gutted cats? I have borla exhaust.
