Default Either my Air fuel gauges are broken or....

my car is running super rich. Last night I ran the wires for my air fuel gauges, and tapped into the purple wire on my harness extensions. To see if the gauges worked, I wrapped the wires to the gauge, connected the power and ground, and turned the car on. The gauges pegged all the way lean, and stayed that way. I figured maybe it was because the car was cold. So i removed the gauges. Then this morning I drove around, came home, connected the wires and started the car. Same thing, pegged all the way to rich. Now my car does stink of gas when its idling, but I thought that was because of the cam and not having cats. What should I do?

when did you read the gauge? my autometer only reads accurately at wot, any other time it just dances around and puts on a light show.

If your not at WOT then ignore that gauge. Its just a light show till you lay into the pedal.

The gauge's actions are completely random and unpredictable. They are very precise and sensitve and the slightest change in A/F will throw it back and forth. At idle and cruising, the gauge should bounce back and forth. This is due to the PCM trying to maintain a perfect 14.7:1 A/F ratio. If it goes to lean, it adds more fuel, and vice versa. It over-corrects itself which causes it to bounce back and forth. A/F gauges only provide qualitative readings, meaning you cannot get any solid numbers from them. They can only be used to see changes in A/F as a result of mods, engine problems, and other things. After tuning, I know that my gauge, at full throttle, should have two green and one yellow light. If that changes, then I know something is wrong or something has been changed.

Hope this clears it up

yes but its not a light show at idle. All the lights light up, and stay lit. I had it temporarily wired into the car, it was sitting under the hood I didnt play with the throttle at all.

forget what it reads at idle, only look at it under WOT. that gauge is completely useless at idle.

If all the lights light up then it may be a faulty gauge or bad install

I tapped into the 02 extension I got from thunder racing. I did use wire thicker than the harness wire too, would that affect it? What should I tap into? Thanks for the help guys.

An air/fuel gauge is a $100-$200 light show depending on what kind of gauge you bought.

If you want useful readings, get a wideband.
