Default Don't flame too hard...exhaust setup

Alright, where do I begin? I'm pretty much a big noob when it comes to anything other than the basics. Let me outline some goals and maybe you fine folks could help guide me along the path to righteousness.

Car: 98 Z28, stock LS1, 93k miles, monster level 2 clutch and flywheel, adjustable master cylinder, 4.10 gears. Daily driver.

Goal: Want to install a header/exhaust combo for a decent price, a good sound and minor gains in hp. Will have to be installed by a shop (unless anyone in the GTA wants to make a few bucks/have some cold ones).

Budget: 2-2.5k - Hopefully within reach, can spend a little more if necessary.

Looking at:

TSP 1-7/8" LTs
TSP 3" catted y-pipe

So far I've thought about these two items, but honestly, I don't really know where I go from there. The car needs to be emissions valid for another 7 years. After the y-pipe, do I just worry about buying a cat-back? Any supporting parts that need to be purchased or is it all just a bolt-on straight forward job?

I'm probably getting laughed at, it's okay. We all have to start somewhere. Lol. Slowly learning the very basics. Some insight would really be appreciated. I also know the car will need a tune after the install is completed.

The header and y-pipe selection sound good. I'd go on YouTube and listen to the 100's of exhaust setups and see what you like. Lots of choices on catback and mufflers

I would go with the 1-3/4" headers the 1-7/8" is bigger than you need with your setup imo. It'll save you a few bucks and you'll probably make more power with the 1-3/4". Bigger isn't always better. As far as the catback goes I like the sound of the gmmg cat back best borla sounds good too. Check out ls1sounds.com

As far as getting on the net and listening to the different set ups, I agree. Just about any set up you can dream of can be found on youtube. Although the sound quality won't always be equal so the same exhausts will sound different. Just do a bit of research before you buy and have fun with it, don't let it give you a migraine lol.

Get 1 7/8...bigger is better. It's been dyno proven. Call TSP and ask them.

The GMMG is my favorite sounding y-pipe fed catback except for maybe the SLP 2OTL. I just put a SLP LM1 on my car in about 2 1/2 hours yesterday from jacking it up to getting everything adjusted and back on the ground. Don't let a shop charge you a fortune in labor times if you go that route.

Definitely go with the TSP 1 7/8 headers.

You probably can find a used catback in the for sale section to save a bit.

Nothing will beat the sound of duals dumped. But for catbacks i like borla, hooker catback. Im currently running corsa and love it.

+1 on duals here. But I disagree about dumping them. Unless you like drone I would go all the way out the back. If you don't mind drone then dumping them before the axle is much cheaper compared to finding a shop that will go all the way out the back or buying Kooks or Bassani pre-fabbed systems.

Honestly exhaust choice is one of the harder decision to make. Everyone has different taste.

I have a y-pipe/magnaflow catback which IS raspy at certain RPMS, but it's quiet driving around town until you're deep into the RPMS and it sounds pretty good at WOT.

Then I installed an electric cutout for when I feel obnoxious. I think it's a great set up for me personally. Because i can go from quiet to loud in 1 second.

Your choice.

This is what I would do and what I did. Lt's into your y pipe then into a electric cutout and leave the catback stock for now. Who knows you may like the sound of the stock cat back after adding Lt's and have fun with the cutout. Then down the line pick out a cat back if you want

Not a bad idea to start. I don't even know the size of the stock exhaust piping though. So you'd have to find a 3" to 2" conversion?

The stock I pipe in the cat back is 2.75 inches so a decent exhaust welder should have no problem welding in a 3 in. cutout in there

Honestly go with the bigger longtubes..its only going to be an asset to you later when more mods are done.I say that because it never stops with "just" exhaust for a daily driver.Soon you will do cold air intake, ported tb..intake,then cam etc lol.Daily drivers can still be very fast with little mods.

You can do headers/catback and still easily pass emissions here...legally! You will have to be tuned though for the longtubes and new o2 sensor locations for it to do so...or there are other means to pass etest come test day

I went with a magnaflow catback originally because I wanted a stealthy car at idle and scream at wot.Once I went turbo the car just seems too tame and I want to replace my muffler with something like a corsa but since you cant get just a corsa muffler Im looking at either gmmg or a borla.I do have an ecutout also which was good for another 15whp on the dyno when I was n/a.

Id highly..extremely recommend a shop in pickering to do your exhaust work called gtcustomexhaust. this is where I got my turbo setup built and for the price I paid and quality of workmanship I couldnt have been happier.I infact tipped! Thats rare for this area and Ive dealt with many shops before including noyzboyz, pipes, majesticmuffler etc. Ask for Matt and just say Regi sent you or you saw a red turbo transam and he will take care of you.He did a number on my car and even worked on sundays.I dont bother doing anything exhaust wise myself at home..I go there just for the fun 15min drive and to see the cool stuff hes got cooking in there.

Ill post pics of my setup and you be the judge.

And I went from n/a to turbo in a week. All bolts on/off and would be back to n/a less than 2hrs in my driveway without a jack.Thats how nice he preplanned my setup.

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. I really appreciate the input and thoughts from all of you. I've been researching quite a bit and I think I've come up with my set up for now.

SLP 1-7/8" LT headers (https://www.texas-speed.com/p-291-te...e-headers.aspx)

TSP 3" catted Y pipe (https://www.texas-speed.com/p-292-te...ed-y-pipe.aspx)

SLP LM1 cat back (https://www.texas-speed.com/p-501-sl...lash-tips.aspx)

I'm also getting the motor mounts as well. So my last stupid question is if I order this setup as above from TSP, are there any other bits of hardware that I need as well? Honestly, I'm probably a bit over my head but I'm trying to learn slowly and surely.

Redbull - my friend actually recommended me to GT Customs. He has a TT 300zx and they did all his work for him. I'm going to check them out at some point this week for an install estimate. Looks like they do great work. I'll be sure to name drop your car when I go
