Default TRi Y and Stepped Headers

I've heard really good things about the 2 designs. Although I've also been told the Tri-Y's are better off in a truck. The 2 designs are very costly and I'm sure that's the reason more people aren't running them. On this build, the Tri-Y's made huge numbers with just the headers and a CAI. They don't seem to carry the power too far but I know I could fix that with a few other bolt on's. See below for the build I'm talking about.

So what's your opinion? Which one is better?

The real answer - both. Tri-y is pretty ideal for a 90 degree V8. Whomever told you they belong on a truck has never seen under the hood of a race car.

I guess it's a matter of what's more important. More average torque or peak HP and the ability to carry out the power longer.

Look up Dr. Whigham's username. Pretty sure he's running/was running them.

My bad. What about some 2" headers? Kooks makes some, and Texas Speed does as well, but not sure if Texas Speed has them out for the Vette yet.

I know ARH custom makes 2" headers for the C5 but I'm not sure how well they fit. I think as of now I'm leaning towards 1 3/4- 1 7/8 Kooks.

You could build some by cutting the collectors of a set of longtubes and welding on tri-y merge collectors to the primaries. Will be pretty damn pricey though.

Wonder how that would work?

Spoke to Steve @ ARH the other day about the stepped header. He mentioned that they don't stock them but can make whatever the customer needs. He also mentioned that the only ones he typically sells go on the COPO race cars.ARH charges an extra $400 for the custom header.

Kooks seems more popular with the stepped header design. I'm wondering if more people are running kooks? I saw a nice thread on camaro5 that Maryland speed put together. They were showing great gains on a LS3 with a 1 3/4 - 1 7/8 kooks stepped header.

That won't work too well.

The concept behind Tri-Ys is to tie exhaust ports together so one helps pull the gasses out of the other. This is dependent upon the firing order of the engine. You also need to take primary tube lengths into consideration, because there is a point of diminishing returns. So, simply lopping off the 4-1 merge collector and welding on something like that isn't going to effectively give you the benefits of a proper Tri-Y design.

Personally, I wish GM offered the Z/28 Tri-Y manifolds at a much more affordable price than the $700+ that they want.
