Default How much HP will a 3" cutout support?

Thinking of selling off my Kooks True Duals and going with Kooks ORY and the TSP 3" Cat-Back with the integrated 3" cut-out. I know the math from David Vizard that says a single 3" pipe will support 370HP with no loss and dual 3" will support 812HP with no loss.

I have plans for eventually going to a D1 Procharger on my current setup. So I would expect somewhere around 650rwhp. With the Duals, I have no doubt it'll support the power. But I want a milder exhaust. In the real world, would a single 3" cutout support the power since it's so far downstream in the exhaust? Or should I be looking at doing dual 3" cutouts on the Y-Pipe?

I'd like it to be nice on the street and aggressive and free-flowing when needed. And the TSP setup is about as easy a bolt-in as I will find.

My vote would be to keep the Kooks system and find some new mufflers to take the place of the ones in the kit. It might not be a drastic change, but could be enough to take the edge off to where you enjoy the exhaust again without having to redo the whole setup. If you do decide to change it up, I'd lean towards the 3.5" version of the TSP catback, and pick up a FM merge to connect it to the y-pipe. It will flow better, sound better and suit your current and future power goals much better than a single 3" catback/cutout.

Thanks. I saw the 3.5" version too. I know Mufflex makes a Y that uses the Flowmaster merge. Just wish it was all stainless steel.

Right now I'm leaning on keeping the exhaust. It's probably the nicest part of the car. But I may try the Kooks oval mufflers or Magnaflows to take some of the edge off. But I'm putting in more gear and restalling my converter. Both will tame the exhaust quite a bit.

But good to know there's a decent option out there.

That's what I'd do man. It would be hard for me to let go of such a nice system like the Kooks duals. If I wouldnt have picked up a Hawks Sinister 4" kit for such a good deal for my car I would have gone duals out the back without question. I have a ton of exhaust experience with trying different combos and setups and mufflers and it gets overwhelming very quickly. Start simple, replace the mufflers on what you've got. If you dont like it after that, you're not out a ton of money from the first change and you can go from there. I went through at least 7 different setups on my SSS back in the day before I found something I was truly happy with. It ended up being a single 4" system with a Borla XR-1, so thats what my camaro is getting from the start haha.

I kind of wish Kooks had offered their oval mufflers as an option. Turned on their side, there is plenty of room where they have the bullets. It'd still be loud but it wouldn't drone as bad. The drone is what's bad.

But I'm going to a 3600 stall/3.73 combo. And if I set lockup to 50ish, it will clear the RPMs that drone and the RPMs to keep up with traffic will drop from about 3k to 2k. I'm hoping that'll tame the exhaust a lot. If not, then the Kooks or Magnaflow mufflers would be my next stop.

But I set off a few car alarms in a parking lot the other day grabbing some lunch. So... yeah.

You could do a 4" merge and cutout and reduce it back to a 3" catback. The cut out will just need to be open before you run the car hard or if you have hptuners use two tunes. My N/A 408 made enough difference between the cutout open and closed that I needed two tunes or only run the car with it open. You get the best of both worlds. I've got that setup with a hooker catback.

Flowmaster is not the only company that makes a good merge...

That's true. Burns makes an excellent Y-Pipe merge that's stainless.

True. However for the money, theirs is hard to contend with unless you need/want stainless. In which case I would go with Burns. But for my car and location, good old aluminized will do just fine for me.

Vibrant makes a good one as well. Their mufflers aren't very good but the rest of it works fine.
