Convert 3-wire (4-way plug) '04 Alternator to 2-wire?
I've done a bunch of reading but am still unsure about the following:
Is it possible to convert a 3-wire alternator setup to 2-wire while retaining proper charging functionality?
I want to run an OEM 160amp alternator and they seem to come only in 2-wire. I've read some info indicating that 2-wire charging is controlled by the BCM but I don't have a BCM, just a 2004 Silverado ECM (standalone).
My 3-wire has the following wires now:
- Charge Indicator Control
- Gen. Field Duty Cycle
2-wire appears to have the following:
- Charge Indicator Control
- Battery Pos.
If it's not possible to use a 2-wire alt, do I need a BCM for the 3-wire to charge correctly?
It looks like the charging systems are completely different but I thought I'd ask before throwing in the towel and finding an OEM 145a alternator. Thanks in advance.
