Default Should a cooling fan spin freely

I'm at the junk yard wanting to pull an engine and I noticed that some radiator fans spin so good and freely and others are harder to spin and won't keep spinning. What's normal? All engines have belt off.

If you mean the fans that are attached to the water pump, if the pump is good, the fan should spin with it. What you are talking about relates to the water pump, as the fan is just bolted to it.

So unrelated to the motor.

What's a good way to 5.3 from a 4.8?

FIRST you ask about fans, THEN how to tell a 4.8 from a 5.3. Short answer- you can't, from the outside, at least. The only difference between them is the crank, rods and pistons. All else is the same.
An engine mounted cooling fan IS related to the motor, dumbass! Something says you are nothing but a TROLL!

You ask about fans (engine driven), I give a good answer, you say "So unrelated to motor" ????? THEN You ask how to tell 4.8 from 5.3. I give a truthful answer. 4.8-5.3 question, pull a spark plug and run a borescope in the cylinder if the piston is flat top it is a 4.8 if dished with a cross cast in it it is a 5.3 ,note later model 5.3 have 799 or 243 heads with flat top pistons. 4.8 or 5.3 early models have 862 or 706 heads. FWIW

It's the nature of online written communication for misunderstandings to occur on occasion. A misunderstanding occurred, let it be water under the bridge. We all have to have a fairly thick skin when online. I've been called far worse than a troll before online, it's not worth the rise in blood pressure to get upset.
