Default Exhaust Size

I have been thinking about posting this question after reading so many differing opinions on necessary exhaust pipe(s) size. I know that opinions are like axxhxxxs , everybody has one.

Is exhaust size determined by displacement, power output, RPM range, phase of the moon or is there a scientific determination?

One uses HP output, another (Tongue in cheek) mentions that if the truth were told we could all get by with 2" pipes.

Are you wanting to know what size exhaust is best for your setup? If so, what is your vehicle and mods?

No, he asked, " Is exhaust size determined by displacement, power output, RPM range, phase of the moon or is there a scientific determination?"

exhaust size is determined by the required CFM of gas flow. that is determined by a whole host of factors, many of which you listed.

best way to determine what works without breaking out a sliderule and a TI-86 is just do a search and find what dynos well with a similar setup as yours.

the bottom line is, exhaust pipe sizing after the header collectors doesn't need to be an exact science. you're not going to see amazing gains by having a specifically tuned exhaust pipe diameter, and for that matter, exhaust piping comes in a very limited range of sizes. also, as a general rule, the farther you get away from the engine, the less it matters.

so get what sounds good and gives you piece of mind. i doubt the dyno will give much of a crap unless you pump so much air that you endanger small birds that wander too close to your turbo inlet.
