Default Borla adjustable catback muffler swap

What’s up everyone. I’ve been considering changing the muffler on my Borla adjustable catback, and just curious if anyone has done this?

Although I’m running no plate, I believe a good bit of exhaust flow still curves and goes through the muffler. The muffler that’s on these catbacks is pretty quite (comparing the muffler only, not catback as a whole). I would like it to be a touch louder, but also change the tone a bit. I’m not wanting to do an entire new exhaust, or go the cutout route. I’ve been looking at Borla’s 3 inch Atak crate muffler. It looks to be similar dimensions, and is also an offset inlet and center outlet like the original muffler. I’m just wondering if this would change much in the sound dept. I’m thinking that since their Atak mufflers are newer technology than when the adjustable catbacks were released for our cars, it may be a more unique/better sound. Any thoughts?

For what it’s worth, I’m currently running long tubes and ory with a mild cam setup.

Yes, it is already catless. I did forget to mention that there is a magnaflow bullit in the I-pipe. I didn’t add it to quite it down, but rather cut down on some of the rasp and clean up the sound. I know it won’t get much louder, but the Atak mufflers are louder than the pro xs (I think that’s what came on the catback) are. I’m also wondering if it will change the sound any...just something a little different that hasn’t been done. Who knows, might be worth a try.

Which y-pipe do you have? Sometimes having the proper merge makes a huge difference

It’s a custom fabbed y-pipe, and it’s got a pretty good merge already. It still had some rasp though. At some point I’m going to replace the headers & exhaust, but that will be down the road. I was just thinking of something minor to do now. I don’t want to drop the coin for new exhaust right now, I have other areas where that money could be used for.

Gotcha. Which Magnaflow bullet muffler do you have exactly. I run their 14419 muffler along with a Flowmaster merge

I have the 14419 also. From what I’ve read the Flowmaster merge is one of the best, but I’m honestly not sure what brand merge I have. It appears to be a good one though, not like some of the ones that have one pipe going into the side of another.

Yeah I'm sure your merge is fine. Since you want a little louder maybe swapping the 14419 with a SLP or Dynomax bullet. They are both pretty much a direct swap more or less. That's one thought

That’s not a bad idea, I might give that a try. It would be cheaper too.

For sure. Of course it will be a little raspier as well, but with the y-pipe design it's almost damn near impossible to eliminate it all. Its really tough to find that perfect balance with the design
