Default E85 spark plug gap and coils discussion

I know that running E85 will require colder (smaller gap) spark plugs, but what if I switch to the truck heat sink coils? Would that allow for a wider gap? What about the aftermarket coils? Everything that I have read on here says that the aftermarket coils aren't any better than the truck heat sink coils.

Why would you need to run a colder plug for E85? Its burn rate is cooler, slower, and requires significantly more volume to match pump fuel...hence what makes it so detonation resistant. I run stock heat range in mine and its fine.

Would truck heat sink coils and a larger that stock gap be of any benefit? I have seen a few aftermarket coils that claim .065 gap and those have the same voltage as the truck heat sink coils.

once upon a time the gap for LS1s was .065.......the bean counters decided that was to generous ........anytime you can run a bigger gap its better for combustion.....but ya gotta have the rest of the ignition up to the task

Not sure what you’re getting at here. The heat range of a plug has absolutely nothing to do with the gap. Not even close.

"Gap" and "cold" are NOT related in any manner way shape form or fashion.

Flex fuel vehicles seem to run just fine on E85 with whatever they come with. Not to say that they, or any others, can't be made to run better; but I'd suggest that as a real simple obvious and easily accessible place to start your research. Maybe a spark plug catalog listing maybe in a parts store maybe.

I have read that e-85 requires a colder plug. But I could never find a good explanation for that. E-85 burns cooler, and helps keep cylinder head temps lower. To me, that would indicate a need for a hotter plug.

I'v always run a standard plug - at the recommended gap - without any problems. The engine makes excellent power, and runs better than gasoline or Sunoco 110.

I ran the OEM rec. plug for some time with E85. I switched to a stage colder plug, and it made no discernible difference in how the engine ran. the only reason to run a colder plug would really be to prevent pre-ignition, which is the reason i did it.

Pantera EFI's 1GN-1A coils could probably do the ~ .060 gap without issues. On ~500 hp engines they are said to gain around ~15-18 hp with correct set up and tune over stock coils.
