Default Constant power steering pump and gearbox failure

Hey geniuses! I haven't posted here in a while but I am resuming my LS6 swap project in my 1978 trans am ws6. I am using a standard LS power steering pump and the original style steering box but they are prematurely wearing. The car has never been on the road and I've already replaced the steering box 3 times and have replaced the pump twice (pumps are brand new, steering box is remanufactured which I hear are absolute garbage) all from moving it around my shop. I left it last year in working shape and checked it last month and no power steering. Ofcourse I spend alot ilof time bleeding the system but clearly something is wrong.

I am honestly getting tired of it and am thinking of converting it to a rack and pinion electric setup from a 5th gen Camaro but that is untested territory for me. I have a remote power steering resevoir feeding the pump and I dont believe my lines have anything to do with it. The box does have the pressure reducers (spelling?) and i am running Lucas oil power steering fluid

I replaced the gearbox this afternoon and the power steering pump was wining immediately and did not have power steering.

What manufacturers are people purchasing components from because I'm willing to throw money at a decent product but I don't want to deal with this issue again

Any help would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

Exactly how are they failing? All the same way? Details matter.

Try putting some air under the wheels - get 'em off the ground. Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel back and forth . . . a lot. Sounds like you have a lot of air in the system.

IIRC there is a different/special valve or pressure spring you need to use.

The LS pump is designed to run a rack and pinon not a gear box.

Both require different pressures and flow.

But I may have completely invalided my own argument...so keep that in mind.

I know if you run an old school Saginaw pump on a Mustang 2 rack you have to use a different/specific relief spring/valve.

The LM7 power steering pump supports the Saginaw steering box in my 70 El Camino quite nicely. No complaints and no changes required in the steering box other than hose adapters.

OP,

what size lines/fittings are you using?

I had a Jeep in the shop once that kept burning pumps up and it was due to the junk aftermarket reservoir having too small of a return line.

Sorry for the lack thereof of details. I have a 1/2 rubber hose feeding the pump and I'm using a -6 PTFE AN line from my pump to my steering box then a standard braided -6 from my pump to resevoir. Please excuse the cars condition as it has been sitting for nearly a year and a half collecting dust and rust. The setup is super fugly, It looked great last year when the box was working but I have removed and installed the lines and resevoir so many times, I just started trying to change the location of various items. The hose routing is temporary. Just tried to get it going so I could drive it up to the new shop (which I did lol).

I do not like how I routed the pump feed line but I did jack it up and turn the wheels left and right to bleed the system before I even attempted to start it up. I kept adding oil and priming until it would stop taking oil. All comments are appreciated, thanks

Did the pump whine eventually stop after adding fluid and purging air?

No it actually got progressively worst, which would be an indication of oil starvation or contamination I would assume

Did a dissection of the box and pump today. Pump was a little dirty but I tested with drill and it shot a stream of oil 10 feet so I dont believe there is an issue with that. The steering box looked decent and I could not spot any obvious issues. I am going to re test with a different resevoir setup
