Default Weight of underdrive pulley help.

I had an ASP pulley before and it was quite a bit lighter than stock. Well, a shop that I give it to for machining sold it, yeah I know, and gave me a pioneer underdrive for the inconvinience. I noticed that the quality is there, but it's nearly as heavy as the stocker. Should I run it or get another ASP? Worth the hassle? Thanks.

Do you think there will be a difference between the two? I thought it was pretty shady, but I was willing to deal with it. Hmm....?

They should buy you the pulley that they took from you. That seems only fair. I've never heard of a Pioneer underdrive pulley. Who makes that?

THIS is the way it WAS 36-40 months ago when I were changing several pulleys

", SLP pulley about 8.2 lb I think and 5 5/8 dia. and same metal as>> stock pulley which weight about10.6 lb and about 7 5/8 dia<<, ASP about 6.3 lb and 5 5/8 dia.

good luck , Johnny

wtf!? What made them think they had the right to sell your part? Theyre ripping you off! It is ridiculous as going to a shop for some new tires and coming back with different rims.

Make them buy you a new asp pulley and never do business with them again.

Yeah, it's kind of a weird situation because I'm good friends with a guy there and one of his fellow employees sold it. Dicked. I'm going to ask for an ASP again, but the shitty part is that I need to have it machined again now. That's the whole reason I dropped it off the to begin with. Dicked.

I wouldnt install their pioneer pulley. The pulley they gave you sounds fishy. Does it look like a modified stock pulley? It might not even be the right pulley for your engine. If its the wrong one it will cause problems.

Dont ask, demand a new asp pulley or the money to buy one.

You don't need to machine the NEW ones. Tell him you want an ASP. If he doesn't agree, he ain't your friend then sue him. If he does then you get an upgrade.

How about the March pulley's weight if ya got it?

I'm undecided between the ASP and March crank pullies.

The weight of the pulley is meaningless because it is a rotational mass. So pick your pulley for it's dampening characteristics.
I'm going with march because it is fluid dampened and that contols the bad harmonics which are increased after internal engine mods..

I run a March. It is heavy as poop. But I heard somebody talking about how it didn't matter because some of it was fluid, so it wasn't as bad. So anyways, when did Pioneer switch from radios to underdrive pulleys? With all the problems the big names have had I sure as heck wouldn't trust that. That is like asking for knock retard.

Thats right, since the weight of the March pulley is a result of the addition of fluid in the casing, it does not matter. The fuild does not spin, thus you cannot consider it when weighing a pulley to decide which one you are going to get. No one yet knows how much the March pulley "really" weighs, which would just be the weight of the casing. You can think of it like a cup of water. When you spin the cup, the water inside doesnt move.

BTW it weighs the same as stock. 10.8 if I remember correctly.

Performance wise "All the pulley with the same underdrive ratio will give you the same gain"

ASP just looks prettier, March is the way to go to control harmonic (crank) vibrations.

Then Pioneer looks quality and the weight of it is similar to stock. I guess it clears the DRTC without having to be machined. So I guess I'll have to run it. I just finshed a cam install and I'll be damned if I run the stocker on it for a few weeks. Do you guys agree? Or ASP all the way? Thanks.

That comment is about as wrong as it gets. Rotational mass is 3 times more valuable then static or suspended weight. Pulley, wheels, driveshafts, are all worth the weight reduction bro.

If so then why is the stock one at 11.2 lbs???

When a mass is in rotation, it doesn't apply the weight solely downward but is distributed across the perimeter due to centrifugal forces when in motion.

Take a light yoyo and a havier one, which one will rotate at a higher speed, with less force applied on the fulcrum? And which one will be more stable in its cycle?

A fluid pulley/balancer that dampens the vibes at high rpms is superior to elastometer dampeners and inertia dampeners.

I have used Fluid dampers in SBC's for almost 2 decades and believe me when I tell you they work.
Also the LS1 with its KR sensors is even more sensitive to that form of harmonic dampening.

A pulley with more weight to the outside of the pulley will be harder to spin up, and have more momentum than one with the weight centered in the middle. If you have a pulley that is only 1" in diameter, but weights 20 lbs, it will still spin up faster than a pulley thats 5" in diameter and weight 5 lbs, if the weight it on the outside of the pulley.

Well, I wouldn't say meaningless...if it weighs more it's still more weight on the nose of the car and I think we all know that that DOES matter at least a little bit.

As far as the better dampening characteristics of the March go, I have a very smooth idling (A4) car with no apparent 'crank vibration' or anything right now and I do plan on staying a 'bolt on' car so I think I'd rather go with the lighter ASP.

Both the March and the ASP are 25% underdrive and the same size.
And as far as the dampning capabilities, the ASP had to be redesigned to reduce the KR it was inducing. So obviously it was a well researched piece
Anyways to each his own, March is a better pulley IMO. And BTW if you have a big cam, I would get a ARP crank bolt if you do not want the ASP one to loosen up and you'll see the beauty a flying pulley can do.
