Default Speed Engineering Y-pipe improvement

I have the SE 3" stainless y-pipe. My exhaust is leaking a little bit and I'm going to take it down and re-clamp it. Yes, I have the nice wide clamps for 3" exhaust. So this is what I want to know:

I will never go to true duals, as I'm not a fan of obnoxiously loud exhaust. What's the best way to improve the performance of this y-pipe? I've seen threads mention merges and 4" etc... so what's the best way to make it better? I will add a cutout eventually but I won't want that open all the time.

The best merge pipes are from Flowmaster. Summit has the full line. Git ya one....

If you go with a larger Flowmaster merge, you might as well step up to the TSP 3.5 inch exhaust

Thoughts on running the 3-4 Flowmaster merge with 4" back to my Mangaflow catback?

I believe that is what Patrick G did on his 500rwhp build ls1. It has been many years since I thought about it.

Wonder what he did for the intermediate pipe. I dont see any 4" available. Must have had it done custom.

I went with the Flowmaster 4" merge to a 4" cutout and then stepped it down to 3" before before it goes over the axle to my Magnaflow muffler. My only complaint is that the 4" cutout doesn't seal as well as the 3" did. I'll see if I can snap some pictures of it if you want me to.

That would be great if you could do that. Also thanks for the tip.

Burns stainless makes a bigger merge out of stainless. Big $$$ though.

Sorry for the delay, had a busy week. EDIT: it was so busy I didn't realize it was actually 2 weeks.

It's not completely done, I have a couple things I want to change on it. I want to add a slip fit part to the cutout Y so I can eliminate the crappy butt joint style clamp, as you can see I used a part of a pop can to help it seal since no ones makes a proper sealing butt joint clamp for 4" exhaust. I also want to eliminate the lap joint clamps connecting the Flowmaster merge to each bank of cylinders but welding them together.

I made the turn down out of a mandrel bent U from Summit, and welded it to the cover that came with the cutout Y pipe, which I cut a 4" hole in.

If you have any questions let me know.

You might be able to find a good clamp at a large truck shop
