Your 1 7/8 headers may be overkill

Theoretically, you could put 2 inch headers on an engine and not see a gain if the 3 inch I pipe is the bottleneck.

How long are we in that 3000 RPM range where the smaller set of headers shows gains anyways? With a stall converter and short gears... like maybe 75 milliseconds?

I have a manual and live in a city of 6m people. I spend 95% of my driving from idle to 3500 rpm. If I just went to the race track in a stalled auto, I too would feel differently.

Dyno pulls simulate WOT if I'm not mistaken... but I agree with your post.

I can respect that from an rpm standpoint but you also are that wot at low rpm’s around town either so low end power on a dyno isn’t going to correlate to part throttle in town driving either. I bet seat of the pants no one would notice the difference in power.

I'd rather have the bigger headers and not need them than vice versa. Unless you have the exact engine size and combo the results are irrelevant to anything else period. Apples to oranges.

Fair comment, I don't even see how people can use a dyno to make comments on low down power for various combos when most Dyno runs I see in the USA start at 3000 rpm, we usually start our runs here in Australia at lower rpm (Dyno Dynamics dyno).

For part throttle, I guess you're unlikely to require full flow of any performance header but I don't actually know how various headers over there respond low down for that reason. I should mention that I don't even have 1 3/4 headers on my car, I have special design 1 5/8 shorties However, I would use full throttle occasionally in that daily use but there's just no room to really wind the car out, through the gears to 7000 rpm unless I head out of the city or am doing something a bit naughty

For this reason, my cam size / style and due to fitment ease, I was recommended the 1 5/8 headers, even though they could have made more money out of me with more expensive bigger headers. Still, I consider stepping up sometimes.

Thread bump

I run a set of stepped 1 3/4" - 1 7/8" Kooks LTs for my H/C build (SBE LS1). As said before, lots of differences with header design, but especially the merge. ARH and Kooks are known for the velocity spike merges, and most of their power differences are gained there.

Approximately how long is the 1 3/4 section of the header? 6" 12" 18"?

I wish he included a 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 step header, just to see if it offered an real benefits other than changing plugs, lol.

8" 1 3/4" primaries, then stepped to 1 7/8"

Lots of big power heavy hitters run stepped headers - their benefits have been realized in many different power levels and builds. It's just not as known to most.
