Question regarding Kooks Y-pipe
I just received my headers and off road Y this week, and had a question regarding the Y. Do they come coated or are all of them just plain galvinized. I knew they did not make a stainless Y, but I was expecting it to be a coated mild steel Y similar to the Jet Hot Y. Instead it was just plain galvinized steel. The Y is an excellent looking piece, and it looks as though it could be the best flowing y out there short of one that uses a merge style collector (QTP), but I was expecting it to be coated. If I remember correctly it was $215.00. Has anyone else ordered one of these and if so, was it coated or not. Thanks

My Kooks y-pipe (catted) is aluminized, but I see no hints of it rusting, even down here in humid Florida. If you want to keep it from rusting, get some exhaust paint and paint it...that will prevent your rusting problem (at least for now). Stainless is not nearly as easy to work with as mild steel, so I can't blame them for making it out of that.

Thanks for the response guys. I guess in the world of $99.00 uncoated Y's and $300.00 coated Y's with a merge collector, I just expected a $215.00 Y without a merge collector to be coated. I called Jet-Hot to see about getting it coated, but for $20.00 a foot, it will go on as is. I do think for the price though, that this is something Kooks should consider changing. I would have gladly paid another $40.00-$50.00 more for a coated Y. I just wonder how much more heat will be transferred to the floorboard with a non-coated Y than would be with a coated Y. I actually had my stainless headers coated for this same reason and now I am going to use a non-coated mild steel Y in conjunction with it and it almost seems hypocritical. Oh well, live and learn.
