Default Header question

Looking to get new long tube headers but I've heard there is little gain and notice. Is this true? If not, I have a 2001 Camaro SS and lowered it about an inch and a half and looking to get long tube headers but do not know which kind (slp, hookers, dynatech and others i have not listed) that will give me good clearance. I also have a slp y-pipe and a loud mouth exhaust. Would you recommend to get a new y-pipe to match the headers?

I gained a good amount of power in the higher rpms with my Kooks LTs. If you're lowered, Kooks would be a great choice, because they tuck up really nice. The slp y-pipe is meant to bolt up to stock manifolds, not to long tube headers (not even their long tubes). It would probably cost just as much to modify the slp y-pipe to fit as it would to just buy another y-pipe. Then you could just sell your y-pipe and get some of the money back for it. The slp LT's hang very low. SLP held an event at National Trails Raceway about 2 years and I got a chance to see their prototype Ultra Z car in person. It was lowered and equipped with SLP longtubes, I couldn't even get three fingers between the exhaust and the ground.

I have the Kooks and they do not hang any lower than the stock Y-pipe did. I gained 24rwhp, W/cats. I can try to get a pic. You want a view from the side of the car to see clearance, right?

Love my Stainless Works headers and 2.5" catted Y pipe. Great quality and fit, made from 304 Stainless, and they have great ground clearance. Stainless Works say the 2.5" Y makes more power than the 3" up to 450 hp. I made 381 rwhp with their catted Y pipe with a TSP 224R cam, SLP lid, and cutout (stock tb, maf, and pulley). The 2.5" Y pipe is one of the reasons I got these, great ground clearance and no banging problems with the botom of the car.

Can you bolt up O.E.M. cat's to the LT's? If I could keep the cats for the sniffer test (I don't know why it would matter where they were in the car), I think I'll get me a set of the Kooks.

The Stainless Works come with some really nice Random Tech Cats that are a slip fit onto the header collector on the driver's side and has a short S bend pipe between the Cat and header collector on the passenger side. I don't think you would have room to put the stock Cats on the end of long tube headers.

Kooks is a very nice header for performance and for ground clearance. Nick at Kooks was just telling me the other day that there set up fits tighter to the bottom of the car than most other systems. We have them in stock if you are still looking, and we are having a sale until the end of the mounth with free freight!!

Hey Glenn,

You don't by chance have a pic of the StainlessWorks catted y off the car do you? Or maybe a pic of the merge collector. I've emailed them twice requesting a picture with no response. And their website is about as pathetic as they come. Their online catalog is dated 2002 and it states the F-Body header is "Coming Soon". I just got off the phone with Summit and they have the exact same info on the headers as SW's website. They do have the catted y-pipe though, but no pics. Great headers, but pitiful info on their product for some reason.
