Default Whoa!! Got duals/x-pipe done!!

It has taken a while, but I finally got the duals/x-pipe done. I got an X kit and mufflers from Summit. I bought Hooker mufflers for it based on the comparison posted on this site. The Hookers were supposed to be almost the quietest and almost the best flowing. I have to say I am blown away. These are a straight through muffler, like the bullets are. But they are quiet! Well, relatively quiet. Much quieter than the bullets I had on the car for the track and probably not much louder than the SLP 2OTL cat back that I used for street duty. But it sounds better than the 2OTL. More like a deep rumble, like a good muscle car should. No cackle, no rasp, just cool. It reminds me of my old 409 with turbo mufflers from back in the day. I know that SOTP is very deceptive, but I would swear it pulls harder than with the 2OTL also. Snatched the 10" Hoosiers loose going into third Anyway, I've not found anything about the Hookers online so thought I ought to report how great they sound and perform.

No pix yet, LOL! I just finished in time to run up the road and head off to meet my wife for supper.

No, this wasn't a bolt together operation. It involved a lot cutting and welding. I fabbed up some oval sections for the two spots on the left where they normally just mash the Y. I went 3" to the X and then 2.5" to the mufflers. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow. It isn't particularly pretty - I haven't welded in 30 years or so.

Here is another tip for anyone contemplating this ... I bought U bends from Jegs or Summit, brand was DynoMax. They are mandrel bent, but still shunk enough that a piece of the bend will almost slip inside the straight sections, or a bit less than twice the wall thickness. I've cut up a lot of U-bends building headers in the past, but I have never seen anything like this.

Ground clearance is adequate. Most is no lower than the catback was and the mufflers are close enough to the axle that they aren't a problem. Here is a picture of the setup .

Hals on front drop it about 3/4" and one coil cut from the rear drops it, but the slicks raise it back up.

Not yet. I haven't had much luck with clips. Seems that most can't view them. My native format is Quicktime (.mov) and even though my brother, who is the most compter illiterate person I know can see them, seems no one else can. I guess my brother somehow has a Quicktime plugin for his browser. I can also generate mpegs (.mp4) but is seems that PCs can't process them, which surprises me. I'm looking for a converter to try some other formats - maybe mp2 will work for PCs.

I will do that, after I put the exhaust back on (last trip of the year to the strip yesterday)

I guess it is relative I've seen a lot bigger, and the bullets they replaced are a lot smaller. IIRC, they are no bigger than Flowmasters and some of the other options I looked at. Maybe the size is why they sound so much better than the bullets

Here is a clip of the car with the X and Hookers. You can also get a better idea of ground clearance. The car has Nittos on now and sits lower than it did with the slicks.

I created and mpeg this time. If the PCs can't handle, post up or PM me and I will try again.

I am about to do nearly the same thing any day now. Im going with the 2.5 or 3" Summit brand x pipe kit that comes with the x and four pipes with the elboww bends in them. I will start out by using the dynomax bullets for now.

I am also planning on buying some 90 degree and 45 degree pieces and going over the axle before its done.

Yeah, it is pretty quiet. It is pretty amazing for a muffler that you can see straight through. It makes more noise at WOT.

Cam is a 232* Comp custom.

That is almost exactly what I did. I used 3" from the collectors to the X and then reducers to 2.5" to the mufflers. I started out with bullets, but they were too loud for me. I used a couple 180 degree bends of both sized to stitch it all together.

No, I didn't get any bent. I just bought a few u-bends and cut an welded. I took smaller pipe from Autozone, split it lengthwise, and welded in strips of tin from Lowe's in to make the two flattened sections for the left side.
