Default What does your March pulley look like?

I got this March fluid dampened pulley directly from March (PN 4521), and it doesn't look how I expected it to look. This might be stupid, but if it's fluid dampened, shouldn't I hear some liquid floating around in there too? Post up a pic if you've got one (I dont have a digital cam any more).

Not necessarily, the fluid might be packed in there real tight, only working/functioning once installed and spinning at higher rpms, maybe?

So just a plain black pulley? That's all mine looks like. Nothing special about it - it's pretty freakin heavy too. I can't imagine how much the stocker weighs!

Yes, pretty heavy. Plain black with 3 pre tapped bolt holes on the outside 'ring'.

if i recall this is a very very very thick fluid, so you would never hear or feel it move around, think molasses at -100 degrees

Yeah, you won't hear any sloshing. If you do, THEN you should be worried.

I heard it weighs roughly the same as the stock one, that's why I got the lighter ASP. It's still well balanced, SFI Approved and is less weight (off the nose of the car too).
You can find pics of the March (and ASP) on Thunder's site I think.

You got the right one. It's heavy and black! I've been very happy with mine.

I talked to March about the pulley wondering asking if i could heat it up to install it and how it was fluid dampened. They said that if i heated it up it might change the viscocity of the oil. So as far as i know it a type of oil in there so its probably pretty thick.

I was set on the ASP, but where I work carries March and I can save like 50 bucks compared to the ASP. They "claim" 12hp...

i just don't see how the heavier march pulley can net better gains than the lighter asp.

It most likely won't. What it does give is the potential for a slightly better balanced rotating assembly and many will argue that it's extra weight doesn't really add up to much because of how it's designed/centered...but on a car with an already well balanced motor I still see it as simply more weight which is well, more weight, and even that measly 4+ pounds is still 4+ more than I want spinning on my crank and weighing down my nose on the launch.

A crank shaft endures alot of flex & harmonics while running. The dampner helps quench them, do you think less mass will help that?

I went with March for the dampening as well. I'm not worried about the mass. I can make up not gaining the 4 lbs of weight reduction in other areas.
Believe it or not I swear I could feel the car reving more smoothly between 5500 & 6600 rpm's. If I'm not careful I easily bang off the rev limiter, where as before I always found myself wanting to shift early because the motor felt like it was straining over 6k. Who knows, maybe my stock pulley could have been slightly out of balance but we'll never know because I'm keeping the March on there.

The stocker & the March are real close in weight, thats what I put in my car. Been in for almost a year (got one of the first) no problems. Most others are light-weight small pulleys. Not the place to look for weight savings IMHO.

so it sounds to me like if you want some added insurance to help the longevitty of your
motor you should get a MARCH ....

but if you are just looking for an extra 10hp and possibly harming your crank , get the ASP. which has NO extra dampning...

I am sure the ASP is NOT going to offer 10hp over the March. Maybe 1-2, but certainly not 10.
