Question Battery power drops after Pulley ?

Ok I still have the stock OEM Battery on my 98 TA [ I wonder how it survived lol ] and it still has the " green eye " ... However, ever since the ASP crank pulley went on, the voltage [ at idle ] has dropped from around 13 to the top of the yellow side [ 10-11 .. my guess ]

As soon as I give it some gas, it goes past 13 and stays there until I come to a stop..

Just wondering if my battery's taking a dump ? Should I just change it because of age ? If so, replace with what .. stock, Diehard, Optima Red Top ? ... Does the Optima fit w/o any issues ?

I still have the stock stereo, but I might upgrade to some better speakers and amp/subs later on.. but no huge power sucking stuff..

It is normal for the voltage to fluctuate a bit with the new pulley. I'm also guessing that the crappy battery isn't helping your situation either.

I added an Optima at the same time as the pulley. So that I would have to deal with the problem you're having now.

Time for a new battery.

The Optima Red Top fits perfectly! Go with the Optima Red Top! Great Battery!

You got a few things working against you... old battery, new pullies, and the auto tranny.

My recommendation: Go with a yellow top Optima and if you sit for a long time in traffic, put it in neutral.

Just curious, did you do the crank and alt kit or just the crank kit?

Cool Thanks!

Thanks guys.. I guess Red Top it is..

Next question is, what part number ?

This is what I got from the Optima website for the 96-02 Firebird V8 5.7L

Part # RED 75/35

CCA - 720

Group Size - 75DTO

Height Adapter Required - http://192.132.24.107/UsingOptima/height_WCM.asp

Is that battery and adapter the correct one ?

Just curious, did you do the crank and alt kit or just the crank kit?
Just the crank kit ..

I think I read somewhere that the ASP pulley requires 800RPM to put a full 12v+ charge to the alternator.

My A4 idles at 900 (warrm, and 1050 cold) so I never saw any voltage problems.

that's a good point I forgot to mention ... the car's idle was upped to similar as Bad30th's ... 1k @ cold and ~ 850 @ warm not because of the pullies, but because the rpms were fluctuating between 550-800 rpms since the TC was done..

I suppose it IS the battery..

Did you get the alternator pulley too? With both pulleys mine drops well into the red at stop lights. At night, the lights actually dim because everything is religning soley on the battery. I have a Optima red top and even with all this draining and recharging in stop and go traffic it's still doing just fine. If you go with a big stereo down the road ASP also makes an alternator overdrive pulley that will solve any charging issues that you might get with a low idle and underdrive crank pulley.

First off, gorgeous Camaro there!!

I didn't get the ALTY pulley because I was told it's not needed on an A4 ..

I also just remembered that the turn indicators slow down to almost a pause [blinks once every 2 seconds, as opposed to once per sec when I see 13+V]

However, the car starts very briskly, cold or warm!

Now, I'm wondering where to get the best price on the Red Top.. Autozone has it for $119.99 , Advance Auto Parts for $124.99 ... Any ideas ?

I didn't have any problems when I put my pully on. I thought I would but once it was on it doesn't have any problems charging the battery.

The Redtop is usually $115-130 everywhere. Some of the major mail order companies will put them on push lists for under a $100 but I have only seen that a couple of times in the past few years (that's how I got mine). I would just pick up the one for $120 and not look back, they really are a good battery for the money.

after my ASP, my lights (dash and exterior) get just a little bit dim at idle. the voltmeter drops to just barely above the warning marks on the gauge. according to atap, my idle is about 650 RPM when warm.

it's a little weird to see the dash lights brighten up when stepping on the gas but otherwise, i've never noticed any real problems with the lack of voltage.

so would it be best to get the alternator pulley as well as the crank pulley?

I had my original battery (2000 Z28 A4, low miles on it though) when I did my pulley just last week as well and it didn't appear to act any differently.
I just installed a Hawker lightweight battery on Saturday and I thought I saw the headlights dim ever so slightly at idle versus giving it some revs, hope it's ok to use the small battery full time, or in my case limited weekend use/racing only at most.

The Yellow top is made specificly for deep cycling over and over. It's good if you like to run your stereo for acoupel ours at a time without the car running or any other situations where it would be drained down to nothing alot. It's about $50-60 more than the red top.

I put on an ASP crank and alt. pulley. Talk about draining the battery. At a stop light it hovers right at the line of the red and all of the lights dim.

isn't there an overdrive and an underdrive alternator pulley now??? i thought i saw something about an alt. pulley that cancels out the low voltage problems from the underdrive crank pulley??

Yeah, ASP makes an alt. overdrive pulley too. There like $25, I've seen them on Thuder's website before.

ok guys, I installed the new battery [ Red Top 35/75 ] but still have the same problem!...

As soon as the fans kick on [ 168* first fan, 172* second fan ] the volts drop from 13 to the top of the yellow mark!.. even with the new battery!
