Technical Service Bulletin. 00-06-01-008 (Mar 22, 2000)

Accessory Drive Belt Squeak/Chirp Noise (Install New Double Row Idler Pulley, Generator Bracket and Serpentine Belt)

1998-2000 Chevrolet Camaro/1998-2000 Pontiac Firebird

Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint Y2107225 with 5.7 L V8 (VIN G -- RPO LS1)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a squeak/chip noise coming from the accessory drive serentine belt. The noise will be most noticeable at idle and low enine speeds.

Cause

The serpentine belt squeak/chirp noise may be caused by misalignment between the idler pulley and crankshaft pulley. A slight rocking motion of the idler pull causes the misalignment, which results in noise.

Correction

To correct this condition on vehicles built prior to the above VIN breakpoint, install the new generator bracket, double row idler pulley and serpentine belt following Service Manual Procedures.

Important

The new generator bracket can be identified by the depth of the idler pulley mounting pilot. The pilot dimension (2) on the new generator bracket is 10 mm. Dimension (2) on the previous bracket was 8.3 mm.

I have the same problem but I also have the
piston slap that you can't do anything about
so I just try to ignore the noises.

I had the same problem for a while. Turns out that my crank pulley was misaligned. I hit it a few times with an impact wrench and havent had a peep since. Give it a shot.

my 01 Z will squeal for 10 minutes when it cold outside...But it complety goes away when it hits operating temp..But this also stated when I put on a SLP underdrive pulley....I've owned 5 other LS1's and none of them ever squealed unless it was the belt, waterpump, idelor, tensior, etc..

ive put a brand new gates belt on my f150 to replace a worn out sqealing belt that had like 60k on it and it squealed just as bad until it got broken in or either the pulleys self cleaned themselves,i think some belts arent 100% correct for the application, meaning they may be off slightly in either composition or the length may not be perfect ,causing problems, ill also say that ive had much better luck running goodyear gatorback belts instead of gates, which i always thought was the better brand untill using both

with high mileage pulleys they wear out and have less surface on the pulley area to grip the belt.get new pulleys for the alt ,ps and crank or spay alot of sticky stuff on the belt.talk to Damian for better ideas ,he knows alot more.
