The 3" cutout, like ANY 3" butterfly type cutout, will have an opening of about 2.5". The 3" only refers to the fact that the cutout is meant to fit on a 3" pipe. Because of the butterfly design, the plate actually goes inside the pipe when open. This is why the opening cannot be 3" because then the butterfly plate won't fit inside the pipe. I think this is true of any butterfly style cutout. The cutouts that use a sliding plate instead probably have a true 3" opening. Anyways, the 1/2" smaller diameter won't noticibly hurt performance.

The butterfly on my McCord is pretty near 3", I used 3"
header collector stubs / flanges to mount and the blade
intrudes little, if at all into the pipe. Maybe 1/16 - 1/8"
at the top & bottom seating stops, nothing on the sides
by the shaft.

I think there's another vendor, was a sponsor here at one
point, maybe still is - Street Pro or something like that?
A bit more expensive, supposedly better materials as I
recall.

Yeah, they're called StreetPro, and I think they go for $250. But the entire thing is made out of stainless steel and it looks like a lot better quality. I have a friend with one and he loves it.

The streetpro looks badass. It opens/closes the fastest and puts alot of pressure to keep the cutout closed. Good materials and strong/durable motor.

What material is the cutout made out of in the Qtec electric ones? The peice looks black so I don't know if it's plastic or just black metal.

The McCords have to be pretty close. I initially had a problem with mine, the butterfly was binding on the inside of my 3" cutouts. I had to use a gasket (which I should have done in the first place) to move it away slightly and create more clearance. There are lips on the edges of the butterfly that are used as bumpstops, but they can't be more than 1/16". I'd say overall you're losing 1/8" or so. 2 7/8" is good enough.

Can't speak for the Qtechs, never had one.
