Default Need to get rid of the exhaust RASP!

I have a VERY bad rasp problem I would like to get rid of and need some suggestions. At certain throttle positions the car sounds like it has blown out glasspacks on it! My car has Hooker LT's, Hooker ORY and a Corsa cat back, no cats on the car. I have seen a couple of posts where a TSP Y pipe with cats was added and the rasp was cured. Would this also quiet the car down at all, I like how loud it is now other than the glass pack sound. Anyone got any other suggestions other than spending the $$$ on the TSP Y pipe. I would like to avoid adding cats to my ORY due to the fact that it is coated. If I have to go the TSP route so be it!

Thanks

I can tell you I have the TSP catted-Y on my car, and there is very, very little rasp. In fact, I don't notice any at all until I get to about 5k, and its minimal then. I'd recommend it.

1 Dynomax Bullet in the I-pipe helps cure rasp.

I had the same problem with rasp at around 2500 rpms. It`s just the nature of the LS1, it may have something to do with the firing order. Don`t add cats to your car unless you want to lose 15 HP. I added a dynomax bullet in the I-pipe, it`s the cheapest cure. Or you could ditch the Corsa and add the Hooker cat-back for around $300. It flows good and sounds great. Check out the sound clips above.

Decisions, decisions?? Looks like many different ways to solve the problem. If I go the Dynomax bullet or XR1 route I would just need the muffler and a couple of band clamps. That might be the easiest way to go and summit wants $36 for the bullet and $122 for the XR1 plus $8.50 each for a couple of band clamps. Hmmm??? I do like the catted y idea also and it might clean up some of the stink at idle and the soot on the exhaust tips. Now I dont know what direction to go.

Thanks for the info!

I installed a CCI 2-disc insert in each side of the y-pipe right behind the collectors and O2's. Took care of the rasp and I recieved many, many compliments on how good it sounded. I now run Dynatech high flow cats with my Supermaxx setup though. I still liked the sound of the ORY with the inserts though. You can get the CCI inserts from Summit.

I put in a Jet Hot Y pipe and cats and I have no rasp at all. The little HP I lost with cats was worth it.

Putting in cats will only lose you a couple horsepower (not 15) if they're good ones and not some piece of generic crap.

Cats and the borla are gonna be more expensive. You could just buy a bullet for cheap, see how you like it then, and step up if you dont like how its sounds. Bullets don't necessarily take away all the rasp, but they do help...it depends on your set-up. Adding the XR-1 or cats should take care of your problem but sounds like you wonna keep the cats on.

He's talking about the Car Chemistry Inserts. They are basicly collector or extension inserts. I was going to run these instead of an exaust but after asking around at the track and here alot of guys have had bad luck making power with both the CCIs and Vortex inserts. They probrably don't kill much power in bolt on cars though.

The bullet won't kill the rasp, just change the pitch and muffle it. The XR1 will kill it some more and muffle it more but it's 5" diameter and makes clearance tighter or hangs lower. The cats will kill it and muffle it. Choice?

Kind of simple, if you want to kill it, get the cats, if you want to improve it a lot, get the XR1, if you want to improve it some for cheap, get the bullet.

I tried the CC inserts and the sound was excellent but the power loss was noticeable.

There was a post on one of the LS1 boards about the inserts and they dyno tested the. Believe the car lost like 30 hp or something.

As for cats, high flow will only lose you about 5 hp from what I've seen and read. Problem is after a certain amount of miles and driving that 5 turns to 10, then 15, and so on when they start to fill up. It's the nature of the beast.

I use and recomend Morso Sprial flow. Took care of the rasp and toned the exhaust noise down to something that is livable. I put 7600 miles on the car in just 10 days so it had to be correct. Later John
