Default K&N Filter

It's time to replace my air filter, and I was considering a K&N. Will it improve the performance of my LS1 over say, a standard factory type air filter?

nothing u will notice....if anything at all. i like em cuz u can wash em and reoil em anytime u need to. its good for people with a ram air setup of any kind (fra, ftra, ssra, cai, etc.) cuz the filter gets dirty a lot quicker, and u wont have to keep buying a new paper filter. anyway, as long as u keep it lightly oiled, it should do a damn good job. just be sure u dont overoil it. when u do oil it, do it at night and let it dry til the next day when u drive it again

Happy paper user here- the gain with a replacement filter will be negligible and IMO not worth the asking price.

having a k&n is just one of those things you can say you have
it's also one of those things that some people will think that you do have another 10 horses or so

I had the k&n in my car when I bought it, once it got dirty I swapped it out for the fram paper filters. I read that they really dont filter that good, and that its better off to just use the paper filter. No loss or gain in horsepower with either of them.

No noticeable gains. Only real benefit, I guess, is better filtration.

I think it was Chevy HP or HP Pontiac magazine that did a test three or four years ago. I think it netted a whopping 2-3 hp over the factory paper filter. I have the K&N, and it's the reusability that enticed me.

on a dyno...on my old setup... back to back pulls... no gains from K&N...no losses either....
decided that the whole oil in the MAF debate was enough to keep me on Paper Filters....not expensive...just replace every couple of oil changes....consider it part of my normal maintainence

I was dead set against using K&N until I saw their demo/display at my tire shop. It is obvious that it has much less pressure drop across it than paper filters. However, if the car has a MAF screen, the air filter wont make much difference either way.

That coupled with going through paper filters so fast due to the FTRA changed my mind.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll just stick to the paper filters.
