Default Advice on True Duals

Many have suggested that I get a true dual setup fabricated. What are the best parts to buy (headers, mufflers) to buy? I want a nice muscular sound and mean at WOT, but during cruise I still need to be able to keep a conversation in the cabin (girls hate it when they can't hear you ).
I have decided to spend the extra $ and get the system to exit over the axel. If I decide to use 3" throuout will I have clearance issues, or should I stick to 2.5"?

You guys are the experts help me out :-)

Thanks!

Best headers are either Kooks or QTP, both are stainless steel. As far as sound goes, click on my signature pic then go to the true duals page. Over the axle will help with the interior noise vs. dumps... One of my favorite sounding systems is a 100% stainless system done with Edelbrock 304SS mufflers dumped (clips are on the site). You will be hard-pressed to run a 3" system over the axle because of clearance.

Good luck! Send me some sound clips when you are finished!

Texas Speed------>
Speed Inc aka ls1speed--------->
Lane's (not a sponsor)
Bassani has a TD setup, see Vinci------->

Dr. Gas sells a universal kit.

I've known quite a few people that go from a catback to TD's back to a catback again for clearance and quiet after going with TD's dumped at the axle. My advice is if you can't get 'em over the axle and exiting out the back, then don't get 'em.

If you want to have a conversation, here are your two options IMO:

1. Over the axle with nearly any muffler...I run bullets after the axle, and it is very tame cruising around.

2. Dumped with big mufflers, like the 304SS Edelbrocks. This means you will most likely have to beat the **** out of your floor boards to get them to tuck so you don't drag them everywhere.

in my sig is links to the bassani tru-duals i have on both of my cars. the 99 formula (pink banner) has headers. so, that one will show you how it fits with headers. it'll also show you a dyno of when i compared it against the borla adjustable catback.

Over the axle will make your exhaust sound like glasspacks b/c of the sharp bends, i did under the axle with 1 chambers 3" sounds great, tame at cruise loud as **** at WOT. https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/327443-3-duals-under-axle-1-chambers-pics-vids-inside.html

I would prefer over the axel, as the car will be driven for maily a night out and I don't want any clearance issues. Alone on an open street, or with good company around town, the car needs to cover all the bases.

I did 2.5" dumped before the axle with Sweet Thunders. Very muscular sounding and screams at WOT. Cruisin down the highway at about 2100 RPM it is very quiet and mellow.....easy to carry a conversation. Around town with a lot of acceleration it is pretty loud, but not unbearable. There are some rattles in the interior at lower RPM, but not too many. I will probably run them out the back eventually, but for now it is great and I will never go back to a cat-back system. I love the sound way too much.

I love my Flowmaster 1-Chambers on my true dual setup but they are loud. Possibly check out the Dynomax Super Turbo/Ultraflow or Magnaflow. Good luck!

Past experiences. I had dumps, then ran them out the back over axle and it made it sound like a pulp wood truck

Although some may recommend not running over the axel, I have to take it. I want to look of two exit exauhsts. I think I will take coated Pacesetters with the universal X-pipe, and have the rest fabricated unless someone knows an online purchase that runs duals over the axel with a complete setup. Should I take the additional investment and have bolt-on and bolt-off high flow CATS while I am at it?

Well, I certainly wouldn't go quoting that as the gospel. It certainly doesn't mean that all over-the-axle setups are going to sound like that. I can tell you that mine certainly don't.
