Default do i have to keep those metal pieces around the plug wire?

ive got some boots to put over my wires to protect them from the headers and i was wondering if i could take that damned aluminum end off. i assume thats there as a heat shield, so would the heat boots serve the same purpose?

NO. They might protect a little bit from heat but I removed mine a long time ago but My 10.5mm Taylor wires look great and no burn.

I say through that crap out. Think of it as a weight reduction mod

I've still got factory headers, but I took the metal shields off on first plug change (over 100K miles back).

For the price of the wires I was looking for max protection, I kept them and used heat wrap where the headers were very close. I know its over kill, but it aint gonna burn I'll tell ya that much! lol.. oh and the metal peices are called heat shields.
