Default best cheap cats for gutting

my Kooks LT's and ORY is on order, and i'd like to buy a pair of cheap cats to take apart and wrap around the ORY to pull a little houdini on 'the man'.

I'd like to get the shortest cats possible (so i have more flexibility in finding a spot on the ORY to put them), while still remaining cheap (since i'm going to rip them apart anyways).

summit has universal cats (catco brand) starting at around $43-$65, and they are 12-14 inches long... that seems a little long to me. autozone has universal cats for like $70, but i dont have details on them.

are there any cats shorter than this, or are they all about that size?

install them for real? or do what i'm doing? how long are they?

i'm just going to pull them apart and tack weld the shells aroud the ORY, so i'm not really 'gutting them'

Carsound cats are like 45 a piece on Ebay, if you really wanna buy something you're gonna destroy.

Fast Toys has a cat bypass pipe kit, although I think it would cost more than just buying the cats and gutting them.

I deal with Arvin cats. at work and they don't have any universals shorter
than 12 inches. You can find them cheaper than $70 around this area, look
outside of autozone/advance/peps...

since yer just doin it to fool mr inspector, why not get used cats. use yours or go to a junkyard and get ya 2 of em for 20 bucks. after all, yer just using shells, why buy new cats if u only need the outside of em?

I'd go to a junk yard or even a muffler shop. Then just get the heat shields welded onto the piping. That way you have a straight through pipe in the middle of the heat sheilds, and no power loss of a gutted cat. No need to buy new cats.

well my thinking is that i was looking at just getting new ones since the exhaust will be new, it would look like it matches... as opposed to old rusty cats on shiny new exhaust pipes, which just looks suspisious.

but that is an excellent idea to check the junkyard... i'll just try to find a matching set that looks clean.
