Safe way to lift LS1 with engine hoist?
I am getting a crate motor this saturday that will be in the back of my truck.
I plan on lifting the engine up out of the crate and then moving the truck, then set the engine on a dolly I have.
What is the best way to lift the engine? I mean, from what points on the engine. Or should I get a lift plate?

I used the M8x1.5 bolt holes located in the front and back of the heads. I drilled holes in some 1/8 by one inch iron to bolt to the engine. To attatch the chain I got 600 pound test screw type chain links from a hardware store.

The easiest way to do it is to lift the car off of the engine. I think there was a sticky made about this recently, if not you can do a search and find information on how to do it with pictures and everything.

I've always lifted mine using the bolt holes for the valley cover. Gives a good point to lift, and it clears the firewall on my converted car (RX7, not much room behind the motor). I put rubber washers down below the attachment points to prevent marring the block surface, and I use an engine leveler with 4 attachment points. I've pulled it in/out ~6 times, no issues whatsoever.

I wasn't too thrilled about it, but it worked. Wasn't on the hoist for long.
Is this a shortblock or a longblock?

Long block.
I think I am going to try some huge nylon straps I have. They are good to 8,000 lbs according to their tags. I guess I'll run em around the headers a few times.

yesterday we used a hi lo to get the pallet into my truck, and instead of using our engine lift to get it outta the bed.. we just put the lift's 2 long legs on my bumper (like a ramp) with tailgate removed, and slide the pallet down. no one felt like messing with chains and assembling the lift
