Default Header installs: DIY or pay somebody?

Hubby says he'd prefer to pay a shop to install aftermarket headers on my '98 Z28. I'd rather give it a go myself. Any thoughts/experiences/opinions? I'd appreciate the feedback, and yes, I'm also checking out the tech forums for info on this subject.

As long as you are comfortable jacking your car up really high, you should be fine. That's prolly the bigest pain.

we did my on a lift, and it was very easy. if you dont have a lift, it might be a little bit of a pain, but worth saving the 300-400 ive seen most shops try to charge.

I did mine on my lift too, verry easy job. If you have ramps put the rear tires on the ramps and use jackstands in the front, that will give you plenty of room. If you have a decient tool set and some mechanical ability I say go for it. Spry all the mainifold to cat bolts with some PB blaster that will be one of the biggest pains, Also change your spark plugs and wire's when the mainifolds are off, best time to do it. Good luck.

did mine on the ground, getting all the old stuff off was a pain, if u are just going to throw the old stuff away then u can just cut it all up. jacking up the passenger side took some *****, had four 2x4s on top of the ramp to get the header to slide in. working in the engine bay was very easy after removing the coil packs which takes a minute. also a good time to change plugs.

I'm going to try it myself. I figure its worth the time to wrench on your own car, plus you save $400. If something goes really wrong, then bring it to the shop.

I'm crossing my fingers that "really wrong" is THAT bad. I'm assuming I can do the install without rendering my car undriveable. Speed Inc. is only a couple blocks from my house so I wouldn't have that far to go.

I was referring to you being unable to drive because your car fell on top of you.

Hahahaha...if that happens, look for a thread started by need-a-z (my husband) entitled " A Z28 ate my wife!"

Don't count that as a bad thing. You will just be more cautious. Which is definatly a good thing. Just triple check everything to be good and sturdy.

It's night and day on a lift/off a lift. Just as anything you do with an f-body.

you dont want to be thinking that. we had my buddy's WS6 jacked to the sky when we were working on it, and i couldnt stop thinking it was going to fall on me. made working a little nerve racking.

oh, and definitely take the coil packs off, youll save yourself some busted knuckles and cut forearms.
