Default SLP MAF causing problems??

Hello, I recently purchased a 00 SS, and I've been having a problem with it. It camewith an SLP 85mm Mass Air Meter, and when I start the car sometimes it will idle around 400 rpms, and drive shitting, it won't get back to normal until I turn the car off and re-start it. I was wondering if I bought a stock Mass Air Meter if I could just throw it on and be fine, or would I have to get it tuned. Right now the car has no SES light or anything, so I'm assuming it was "tuned" to work with the SLP MAF.

First of all...the SLP MAF is a POS and a nightmare to tune for. Most people aren't able to tune for it, making it pretty much useless. I put one of my car when it was pretty much stock and it was just fine. But when u start adding things like headers and cams u need a tune and while ur tuning, the SLP MAF will throw things out of wack. It basically tricks the computer into seeing less air so it bumps up the timing giving u a little bit more hp. I'm not 100% sure about the specifics of that last sentence, but I do know it tricks the computer by way of a resistor.

I'd get the stocker if I were u. My SLP MAF is just sitting in my garage cause I can't get it to work right. If ur worried about the ugliness of the stocker, just spend urself a few hours and polish it up a bit and it'll look just fine. I've read that the stock MAF is good to around 500 rwhp, and beyond that it starts to become somewhat of a bottleneck.

Another thing you could consider is going MAFless and run in speed density mode. I have no experience with this, but I'm sure there's plenty to read in the tuning section about that topic.

So can I just throw on a stock MAF and be fine? Or will i have to get the car re-tuned.

Depending what mods you have done, if it is just bolt ons, you can throw the stock MAF back on and you should be fine. Computers are pritty smart, should retune your LS1 just fine.

You can prolly throw the stocker back on and be just fine. The only reason I'm not sure is if you've had a tune. If you only have bolt on's, I doubt someone's tried to tune for it so u'll be fine. Even if u've had a tune, I'd still get the stock one back on if I were u.

I had a major lean issue with the SLP maf. Its a POS! I replaced it with a stocker from a 99, major improvement. Throttle responce is back, feels like a WS6 now. Before, it felt slower than my LT1 that was pushin 315/340 at the rear.

Put the stock one on.
