Breathers replacing the PCV entirely will keep the oil
out of the intake, and on your driveway instead.
Keeping the crankcase under suction (at least under
low blowby operation) keeps oil from weeping past
the seals / gaskets. With a breather this doesn't
happen and oil leakage will increase.
If you have a lot of blowby the problem is likely that
PCV, both the valve side -and- the makeup side that
runs to the TB fore of the blade, can draw up oil mist
and chase it up the lines. Catch can or other oil
separator schemes (some use compressed air mini-
traps, I have been using a little fuel filter with a sump
style bowl though it's a bit ghetto-looking) will defeat
this to some degree while retaining the negative
crankcase pressure at idle / low throttle.
