Default Xr-1 or Cats???

Just installed Pacesetter's and ORY. I have Borla catback. At idle the car sounds great, however, under acceleration I think it sounds awful. What would be the best way to smooth out the sound, an XR-1 in the I-Pipe or cats in the Y? Also, which would flow better? Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well.

XR-1s where the cats are supposed to go would work best (for flow and making it quiet). If you run cats, get the Metal Matrix type as they flow the most.

Getting XR-1 to fit where cats go would be almost impossible. Now a Dynomax bullet or some sort of spiral flow will fit but you will still lose ground clearance. Best bet would to run a XR-1 in the I-Pipe without losing power. It should cut down 85% to 90% of the rasp. If you want to get rid of all the rasp, run high flow cats, but you will lose a few hp, although the new metallic cats seem to be losing less than 5hp on the dyno.

Sounds like a good suggestion to me...I'm running an XR-1 in my i-pipe. One thing to consider, though...running cats will help with the stench of unburnt fuel that comes from an ORY...I don't know about yours, but my car is downright stinky without cats...

I have Xr1 and ORy and it's still too loud. It really sucks at around 2000 rpms....the rasp is unbearable !!!!

In the future I'm gonna have a catted Y-pipe, and XR1 muffler

Hate to hijack, but how would you compare the rasp of the XR-1 to that of the Loudmouth resonator. I was going to get a XR-1 due to the rasp of the loudmouth , but now you say this!

A lil more info would be helpful .

TIA

LOL - I'd say it's identical...
I've had both and it's just as annoying.

Note that:

1st setup: Stock headers, cats, Loudmouth
2nd setup: MAC Headers, NO CATS, XR1 welded into Loudmouth's resonator.

In both setups, I HAVE annoying rasp at 2000 rpms. Believe me, the only way to get rid of that stupid rasp is to have cats....

LawmanSS:

Do you have anything behind the XR-1, I am planning on keeping my Borla catback, which can be left open of course.

Having only the XR-1 or any bullet muffler is going to have rasp since it is straight through. But compare it to the rasp you have with open headers, and you will see how dramatic of a difference they can make. Since you are just trying eliminate some rasp from another existing muffler, the XR-1/bullet style mufflers do an excellent job of getting rid of the rasp.

If you want to hear what just a XR-1 in the i-pipe sounds like with no other mufflers, search for BorlaMouth exhaust, and Dynomouth for the same thing but with a dynomax bullet muffler.

My setup: Kooks 1 3/4" LTs, ORY, Borla XR-1, GMMG, CME...it's fairly loud, but not unbearable.

How does the dynomax compare to the XR-1 in sound and flow capability?? Is it worth the extra $90 for the XR-1?

In terms of flow, the XR-1 and dynomax are virtually the same since they are both straight through. The XR-1 has a 5 inch casing opposed to the dynomax's 3.5 inch casing which gives the XR-1 a lot more packing. The XR-1 will give more reduction in rasp, and will give you slightly more noticeable reduction in sound.

So let me get this straight, you cut out the loudmouth resonator and replaced it with the XR-1,or you left the LM resonator and added a XR-1 in the y-pipe so now you have both?

TIA

Just wondering where you found the XR-1 for $90?

I think he means $90 in addition to the Dynomax.

What about putting a single high flow cat in the I pipe? This will help alleviate some of the horrendus exhaust odor.
