Default EGR... to remove or not to remove??

the only reason i wanna get rid of the egr is for the clutter it makes in the engine bay. but if i do remove it and do not have it deleted from the computer by tuning, what problems will it cause me?? ive heard bad gas mileage, retard timing, etc. and will these problems be corrected once i delete it from the computer??

No problems will result from it. I have heard that some people have lost gas mileage while others gain it. The only negative thing from removing it is the SES light...Thats it.

The only thing that will do is get rid of the light for you. If you can live with the light being on it will be the same as if it was off.

well what will the computer do w/o the egr equipment in there? something has to happen if its supposed to be there and isnt. i hear it retards timing and decreases gas mileage. any truth to this??

Not that I know of... maybe someone else will chime in, but I am almost positive there will be no negative effects of not programming out the egr code.

Without turning off EGR in the PCM, it will continue to add the degrees of timing shown in the attached chart when it thinks it is activating the EGR valve. Without recirculating the exhaust gasses with the increased timing, you may get part throttle detonation. Then again, you may not. Just showing what else is going on during EGR activation.

i removed mine over a year ago for the clutter reason plus it was easier to install my headers. i have had no adverse effects. other than the ses light staying on, no problems. i check the codes every now and then with my hand held to make sure its only egr related.

i lost my low end torque when i changed to an ory. For some reason when i took my air pump and egr off i got ALOT of it back. so being stock you might just get an ses light with no noticable change in performance!

Does anyone know if you !EGR, can you pass emissions test without it? I know different states have different emissions regulations, but could a 98-00 LS1 pass without the EGR in most states?

My 2000 SS just passed with no issues in Arizona. We don't have the sniff test here anymore. They just hookup to the PCM and look for codes. They did however pop the hood and take a look around. I was a bit worried about the headers but they didn't say anything. I plugged up the EGR hole in the intake with a 1 3/8" freeze plug I got from AutoZone. They didn't say anything about that either. Here are a couple pics of freeze plug.

You should be able to pass the Emissions test 96-up car test using the PCM just make sure you get the codes disabled from a performance shop so you dont fail.
