QUOTE: I mean would you not use one of these intakes because they're made from aluminum?

Exactly.............Thats why it's heavier and suffers from heatsoak, and the reason I won't use one.

Ive seen a few custom sheet metal LS1 intakes that were made strictly for racing purposes. Why would they be using aluminum if heat soak is costing that much HP?

because they cant afford the tools it would take to mold a custom composite intake?

The second one (Harrop Hurricane) does have more pieces that aren't shown. Two boxes that connect to inlets and ultimately air filters.

Because heatsoak doesn't matter on a strict racecar, and won't cost them any hp. You can ice down the intake between runs. It won't matter on your streetcar either if you want to ice down the intake at every stoplight.

BINGO!!

They do look bad-*** and I'm sure they perform well too.

Lots of good info in this post. For me, running an all aluminum LS1 makes me want to keep it as cool as possible.

Comparing those multi- TB intakes to single TB manifolds is like comparing apples to oranges.

Default Aluminum Vs Composite

There is no contest, The LS-6 or the FAST are always more powerful. we just finished a 13 manifold test for Street Thunder magazine. The aluminum manifold in that test was soft every where, by about 5lb ft. and 10 hp.
The only reason to used the aluminum intake is if you want to polish the intake. We offer two different versions of the LS-6 intake, Our oval entry 75MM by90MM and Our 90MM entry and we have the throttle bodies to go with them.

How about a quick summary on the results of the test...I know we would all love to hear the results.

Anyone ever port one of the aluminum manifolds then have it ceramic coated? Does wonders for reducing external header temps because it is such a good insulator, I would assume it would work to reduce intake air temps when the manifold temp is high.
I am also surprised there is no attempt on those 'high buck' aluminum manifolds to thermally isolate the runner and throttles from the cylinder heads.
BTW, one main advantage of magnesium is its higher specific heat. It will have a lower temperature rise for a given amount of heat input, compared to aluminum. As said, it is also a lousy conductor of heat compared to aluminum.

by having it ceramic coated, unless you mean the inside of the intake, and not the outside, it would make the incoming air that much hotter, it isnt the outside temp of the manifold that does the damage.

They said they did a 13 manifold test so i'm sure that included the bbk. can you name 13 intakes other than the BBk?

I can't name 13 intakes including the BBK.

If I count the LS7 and both combinations of LSX...
LS1, LS2, LS6, LS7(doesn't fit), LSX 78, LSX 90, Weiand, Holley, Truck intake, BBK, GM (carb), Edelbrock (carb)

I'm still short one...what else is there? Are the Holley and Weiand really the same intake?

the ls6 is worth 12 to 15 over ls1 the fast 78/78 isworth about 20 over ls1 and fast 90/90 is worth over 30. Id bet the aluminum intakes are really comparable to the ls1 when heat soak sets in.
