Default Suncoast Ram Air question...

Hello everyone. I have the Suncoast WS6 hood with the suncoast ram air kit. The lid or ram air part of whatever youd call it is very odd. Doesnt look like a normal lid. Do i need to run this exact piece for max performance/use of the ram air? Id really like to get a normal lid that i can use to paint to spice up my engine bay but will it work? I dont want to sacrifice my functional ram air but really want a normal lid so i can do some customizing of the lid, intake and FRC's. So can i get a normal lid and keep the same functional ram air or what? Thanks. heres a pic of the lid now or whatever its called.

That is the Suncoast air intake setup. It seals directly to the bottom of the hood. I have the Suncoast Raptor hood and use a TSP lid with no problems.

Yes you can, I had the same setup on my car when I bought it. About a month later I ditched it for a SLP lid with CAI. Works great and I plan on painting it this winter.

Well, you do realize that the hood is constructed differently right?

The stock hood:

Suncoasts hood has a large cutout in it, as you know.

you CAN swap back but.... you need the stock upper radiator support. and lower part of the air box and what ever lid you want and a new filter. then swap back. BUT I made more power with the suncoast set up. up to you IF you do swap back I have the stock parts you need and will trade you for the suncoast set up mine has a crack in it and I my filter is getting really old???

Well im going to think about it for a while. Im not going to do it if im sacrificing power. I jsut wanted to check to see if basically i could take off my suncoast box and throw on a lid and be done.... but i guess not. Know if i can get a different color, like red or black, filter for it? Thanks!

I personally don't see how you could gain any power with "ram air" from the hood. Dyno graphs tend to vary at least a little every pull so maybe that was the case. My first and second dyno pull varied over 10hp. I think there have been many threads here about how you wouldn't ever notice a gain from ram air until 100mph+ and no fan is going to create that kind of wind but thats just my $.02. I say get the lid and be happy with it.

So will the Lid fit on in place of my Suncoast box with no problem and will i need to do anything to the hood to make it functional.....?

You will need the radiator shroud for the stock airbox. Otherwise you'll have nothing to bolt the lid to. Its a large plastic piece that connects with four bolt and the filter goes inside with the lid on top. If they didn't give that to you when they sold you teh car you'll have to trade with pontiac.

How about if i swapped it for the FTRA instead.... would this work? Like take off my suncoast kit and mount up the FTRA with a lid? Would i need the radiator shround still for that also? Or will jsut buying the FTRA kit and LID be a even swap? How does the FTRA perform to Suncoast?

If you go with a lid you need the shroud, period. There's no way around it.

you will regret changing to a air lid. I have the suncoast ultra z hood and i believe this is the strongest setup for our cars. they will not show up on the dyno because the air is not being forced in but once you get on the street it is a different story. When my car was a bolt on car i was trapping 2-3 mph higher than any other f-bod w/ the same mods. I never lost to another bolt on car either. the hood works, period.

I would think you would get a constant supplu of cold air, into the motor, since it seals directly to the outside air. With the stock-type setup, with a lid, aren' t you basically sucking in engine compartment-heated air, even with the FRA? The air still has to pass by the hot radiator and off the hot pavement below, no?

I would keep it.

I say keep it, and you cant just throw a lid on it. Its a diff size than the stock air box and the filter is completely diff, its a 90-96 lt1 vette filter. Honestly i think your setup looks real nice and clean under there, no reason to put an air lid in there.

ok. THE POWER I SAW ON THE DYNO was the way the two boxes flowed. with regular set up and lid then Very next run still on dyno put the sucoast set up back on and the car whent LEAN. so we tuned to compensate and made mor power. the way the air hits the mass air from the sun coast is different so it was not reading all the air comeing in but did make a difference and made more power. I GUESS DETROITMUSCLE the power could have come from just normal ++ or --- you see at a dyno but the lean thing kinda proves a little more air flow ......or I could be all wrong. and to SUPERMAN09 yes I have a K and N filter and its red. yours is blue and you can get a wight one too from some off the wall company
