My question is, will regular antifreeze hurt the engine?

The "green stuff" is more prone to oxidizing the aluminum in our engines. Hence, Dexcool's main purpose. Just use it.

Can you elaborate on this...according to the Valvoline website, not only is Zerex G-05 not approved by GM, but it's not even recommended by Valvoline...

From the Zerex FAQ:
Can you use Zerex G-05 in a GM Vehicle?
While one can use Zerex G-05 in a GM vehicle, Valvoline recommends that you use a GM DEX-COOL approved formula in a GM vehicle under warranty.

Personally, I would just stick with Dexcool. I've never had any issues with it.

Not sure when/if GM plans to change the factory fill, but as of '05 they still came with Dexcool.
