Need Help with Headers I just recently installed a magnaflow cat back and an SLP Lid. i was thinking of doing headers next but im really not too sure which ones to pick. i want to keep my cats for sound and inspection purposes. im definitely going to add long tubes so am i going to need a catted y? which combo would be the best? im not looking for the top brand but something in the middle. i also want headers that wont ruin the sound of my car. its got a deep sound to it and the tone is perfect for me, so i dont anything that will give it rasp or drone. im not sure how strict NJ is about inspection but would i pass with a catted y and LTs?
I can't directly answer your question, but I can tell you that the TSP catted-Y has no O2 provisions and throws codes. It also smells pretty bad back standing behind the car, but not sitting in it or standing around it (i.e., not THAT bad).
So I'd assume that any high-flow cats on a Y pipe will be the same. Not gonna pass a test, but sound great. Correct me if I'm wrong, since the TSP is the only Y with high-flow cats I've been exposed to.
Maybe fabricate a Y with CARB certified cats to pass emissions. I've read that no LT will pass anyway, in a strict state like California. I also recall reading that NJ is pretty **** about them as well.

QTP High Velocity Merge Collector Long Tubes for $750 (price break from $1100) are hands down the best LT for the money on the market right now.
Pacesetters are about half that price and are not made of stainless (as QTP's) and do not feature the high velocity collector.
QTP LT's, + catted QTP Y-pipe (one of the best flowing in the business) will net you an awesome setup.
Also, all long tube headers pretty much sound the same.

nj does a check to see if you have any codes thrown by the computer. they don't do the tailpipe sniffer anymore. (they have the option of bringing it back at a later date if they wish, pretty sure).
I have the flp's (now dynatechs) with the interchangeable cats and offroad pipes. I really like them. You will retain the same sound as long as you run cats. If you run an offroad y it will be raspy and more high pitched.

Your the first person I can remember saying they want to keep their cats for the sound they emit. Sounds like an oxymoron to me. You need to gut your cats and get some 02 Simms if your worried about a DTC turning on your SES. Some headers and gutted cats. That spells raspy with a capital "R".
I ran an ORY for awhile and got tired of the sound also. I purchased the TSP catted y and had no terrible smell but it did sound a lot better, got rid of all the rasp. The QTP setup is a very nice catted y but is much more expensive.

I have a buddy that i helped install the QTP on, the collector on the Y-pipe is freaking huge, it has an adaptor to downsize it to the catback. Seems to be a very good piece although a little pricey.
