Default Ram Air question

So Ive noticed that a WS6 seems to have a raised airbox to allow air to go in through the scoops. I was always under the impression that all TAs had the same airbox. Ok so I dont really have a WS6 to compair mine to directly, but I would like to have my airbox to where the air comes in from my hood. Right now it seems to just go right above my airlid instead of into the filter directly. Anyway to do this w.o buying a full assembly?

The WS6 air box opens Upwards and the stock air box opens Downward.

There are few approaches to getting more air in:

1) Add one of the MANY Cold Air Induction kits ($200 - $300) that run a scoop down in front of the air dam, plus a new air box lid ($100) that eliminates all the stock baffles

2) get a Raptor Hood ($700) that feeds air via two big holes into the open slot in the front of the stock air box, plus the air box lid as above ($100)

3) Get a WS6 hood ($600) plus WS6 Air Box ($300)

I chose door number 1...

There are lot of other minor variations.

The WS6 box does not open upwards on the '98+ LS1 cars, assuming it's LS1 cars we're talking about.

It opens exactly the same as a base model air box, only difference is it's elevated (bigger opening/gap) to allow air from the hood scoops in at speed.

You could get one, it will allow for a bigger/taller opening to feed air into the box/lid assembly.

Yeah, at least one of the aftermarket WS6-style hoods use an LT1-style air box that opens upward like you described. I can't remeber which brand it is though, maybe Suncoast? But that's definitaly not how it looks stock.

You could also put washers under your air box to "raise" it up to allow better air flow. Just a thought, and way cheaper.

Mine is a WS6 and mine opens upwards , just like ALL the other stock WS6 airbox's in the world.

Yeah, pretty much its just a bigger opening. Which is one of the good things about the WS6. The opening is also bigger than Camaros lids have. I think later on with some tuning and mods when the car can use more air, the bigger box is a good benfit.

I think you might be confused. We're not talking about how the airbox opens in terms of the lid coming off to change the air filter and such (yes the lid does obviously open upward to remove the filter) . The question is in regards to where/how big the opening is that lets outside air into the airbox/lid assembly.

There is not a single LS1 F-body (including WS6) ever to come from the factory with an air box that has its air inlets on the top of the airbox. That was the LT1 SS/WS6 cars that used to be setup that way, and at least one aftermarket LS1 hood manufacturer uses that style as well. That is not the stock configuration for LS1s. Stock LS1 opening is on the bottom of the air box, and the air is forced/sucked in through a gap between the bottom of the air box and the frame crossbrace. Only difference with the WS6 cars is that the gap between those two is taller (hence bigger) to allow the hood scoops to force more air in at speed.

The WS6 ram air vents in the hood are pretty much usless unless you get a kit that seals the ram air inlets to the box (BG kit). Most of the air that goes into the air box comes in from the inlets where the hood release is, right under the ram air inlets, not from the so-called ram air vents with the two rain baffles. All you have to do is kneel down and look into the lower openings and you can see that more air would obviously be sucked in from them. Just the facts.

I have the SLP CAI, so my front air box opening is sealed now. Everything comes in from the scoop. I always wondered whether I could leave the air box un-sealed and get flow from the front and below, but I worried that might dissipate the air pressure from the concentrating effect of the scoop...
