Default Louder Valve Noise With New Headers

JUST INSTALLED MY NEW PACESETTERS AND TSP CATTED Y PIPE, FOR SOME REASON WHEN IM DRIVING IT SOUNDS LIKE A LOUDER VALVE NOISE ALMOST LIKE A RATTLE FROM THE FRONT, IT USE TO DO IT BEFORE THE INSTALLE TOO, BUT WHEN I SHIFT IT IN NEATRUL AND REVE IT YOU CANT HEAR IT, I WAS THINKING MAYBE IT COULD BE THE FUEL (87) AND GETTING SOME KNOCK NOISE

Some valvetrain noise increase with headers is normal, they do not insulate sound as much as stock manifolds. If the sound was there before the headers, and it's the same sound but a little louder it's probably normal.....

u have to think that the headers are not very thick and designed for one thing, power. stock manifolds are way thicker than they need to be which helps insulate the noise.

Did anyone notice the end of his post?

87 octane gas?

Do the headers have provisions for the AIR system? If so is the AIR system hooked up?(I can't remember if the '02's had them)

Run premium for a while and tell us if you still have it.

Who buys an ls1, or any other car that takes premium, to cut corners and save 10 maybe 2 bucks on a tank of gas.

I don't get it either. This debate was going on in the New Enthusiast section last weekend. It will always baffle me as to why people buy a car like an LS1 F-body, then worry about the extra ~$0.20 per gallon for premium. It's about $3 per tank more than 87 in my area. If you buy a full tank every week, that's $156 per year. $156/year to keep your timing advance on the high octane table for peak power is logical to me. Seems that for people who spend sometimes thousands per year on performance upgrades, it's silly to worry about $3 per tank......

Well if it's not the fuel it could be the check valves in the AIR system, do a search on them.

Problem is, if the car is getting audible knock, that's a problem that needs to be fixed before it does damage. Now, without hearing the noise in person, it's hard to tell what the sound actually is that you're hearing.

But, if you suspect it may be knock then the best advice anyone can give you is to put premium in for a few tanks and see if it goes away......

It is good advice though. They're only meant to be run with 91 octane. For the price of the headers you could have upgraded to the higher octane gas your car needs, for two years. What you are doing is counterintuitive. You are increasing hp with the longtubes, and decreasing it by using 87 octane gas and running on the low octane tables. Your net hp gain will be small.
