Default Why True Duals?

How come everyone wants true duals.. well i do to.. but doesnt all this mandrel bent Y pipe and cat backs have just as much flow.. i mean don't they make the same amount of power?? u might gain some low end torque when dumped before the rear axle right? help me out here.. if theres a increase it cant be no more then what 5 hp????i don't no.. just a guess.. wonder if anyone has dynoed true vs Y pipe?
Thanx

Two 2.5" dia. pipes will flow about the same as a single 3.5" dia. pipe. Two 3" pipes will outflow a single 4" pipe by over 10%. To get the most possible exhaust flow, a true dual with H or X-pipe is the best bet (especially if you can do 3"). The sound will also be different. The only drawbacks I can think of to true duals are the difficulty in routing on the F-bods and a bit of added weight (2 x 2.5" pipes = ~35% more steel than 1 x 3.5" pipe and 2 x 3" pipes = ~50% more steel than 1 x 4" pipe).

Sound - unlike any catback, nor reproduceable by one. imho

that helps.. but sure theres more flow? but how many horse does that equal? im guessing it would have to be mendrel bent for actual increases in power? i em still almost concidering duals.. but there are to many cons to it.. ground clearence.. how to make the back bumper look good with no tips.. getting a shop that will actually do a good job designing it. thanx again for clearing that up.. im not completly convinced on getting duals yet! hah but u got me closer.

I think an honest projection of a true 3" dual setup is about 10-15 rwhp over a good flowing catback. The exhaust is almost always a bottle neck when you are talking about F-bodies. true 3" dual is as close as you can get to open exhuast and I hav seen cars pick up 20 rwhp from dropping the y-pipe.

As far as the back bumper issue, they can be made to run all the way back... unless you just want dumps.

The routing is a little difficult. Not much room to work with under our cars. But after everything is said and done...you actually have more ground clearance. On the x-pipe system, the pipes tuck up. They don't hang down like y-pipe systems do.

Also...you actually drop weight switching from a catback system into a x-pipe system. You lose about 40-50lbs.

Btw...my exhaust consists of...MAC headers, no cats, Dr Gas true dual 2.5" x-pipe system, dual cutouts, Dynomax bullet mufflers, turndowns before the axle.

Sounds nice, any dynos yet???

Or you could do 3" cutouts RIGHT after the headers and be done with it.
