Default Anyone had to replace a water pump yet?

I think mine is going out. I can see coolant on the power-steering assy., font of the block and on the oil pan, plus I can tell I'm losing coolant b/c the coolant level in the radiator keeps going down.

Where should I get a replacement pump from? Should I get a GM or will an aftermarket one from a parts store do just as good?

Thanks in advance,
Kyle

I helped a friend swap his out, he was having the same probs as you. When we got the pump pulled it turned out to be a bad gasket. We had the new pump, so we just went ahead and installed the new one.
It only took us an hour or two to install the pump.

Hey Alan,

Did you guys get a GM waterpump or did you use another aftermarket one from somewhere else? Also, how would I be able to tell if the pump is actually bad? Can you tell once you pull if off?

Kyle

We weren't able to tell if the pump was bad or not. I do know that the gasket was screwed up in the area of leakage. The gasket is a piece of metal w/ rubber surrounding it. The rubber was off the metal on the right side. Which is where it was leaking.
It doesn't take much to change the gaskets, they are much cheaper than the pump obviously. If you want I can check it out, and see how it looks. I'm in Round Rock also.

edit: It was a GM waterpump, purchased from GM parts direct.

Cool! I check it out when I get home. I'll look at it when I'm changing out the gaskets. If I see anything out of the ordinary, I may send you an e-mail to get your ph#.

Thanks again,
Kyle

in 99 (i think) the gaskets were updated, make sure you get the new ones (silicone o-ringed)

i would check those first, the waterpump is cake.. just remove the lid etc. and the water lines.

if there was no leak at the gasket, remove the pulley (if bolt on style) to view the weep hole.
it is on the bottom inside edge of the snout. you will see dried coolant if that is the source.

gm will charge you 255 for a brand new oem one with warranty.
napa will charge you 140 for a remanufactured one
VALVEGOD will charge you $80 or so for a brand new oem one. (where i got mine)

I reccomend doing a search for him here or on the other .com

most water pumps seem to last 60k or so.

Thanks for all of the replies guys!

I bought two gaskets today in hopes that I could go home after work today and get crackin' on it. So, what did I find??? Both gaskets where completely trashed!!! It looked like the silicone had completely separated from the metal so water was going out on both sides of the pump!!

I'm just glad that it was the gaskets and not the pump! It's goog to know that ValveGod has the pump that price. I bought a set of heads from him a while back. He gave courteous and quick service!!

Thanks again for all of your help everyone! I'm going to post some pics of the gaskets and stuff once I get some spare time....

Ok, I know it's running warmer now since I've replaced the gaskets. The needle still just sits at about 200-210 but it's hotter than hell under the hood and the upper radiator support is hotter than I've ever remembered.

I'm not getting any SES lights or abnormal operation but it's just my gut-feeling that something isn't right. I guess I'll have to recheck everything again this evening. Anyone have any suggestions or advice? I'm just baffled here!! It should be running cooler!

Did you make sure you got all the air out of the system when you re-filled it? Did you match the new gaskets up with the old ones to verify holes were the same, and put them on the same way the old ones came off? Just a couple of thoughts.

I followed Hypertech's instructions for refilling the cooling system after changing the thermostat. Their instructions are very unclear of whether to add coolant through the radiator or surge tank.

How would you recommend to go about making sure there is no air in the system? My Haynes manual doesn't really go into any detail about refilling the system. They just say to "fill it up"??

Thanks,
Kyle

I typically take the radiator cap off, when the car is cold like in the morning, and top if off while it's running.

I do that about 6-7 times over about 10 minutes.

Unfortuneately, I found the write-up at installuniversity for changing the thermostat too late. Their instructions are much better and they say to remove the upper TB cooland line as well.

I'll give John's method a try. If that doesn't help, I'll empty the radiator and start fresh. Thanks for all of the replies.

When I did mine, I left the throttle body coolant hose (from the block to the TB) disconnected so air could escape. Then I just filled up the radiator.

Since yours is already full, I would do as John said. Pull your cap off, start the car, and let it idle till it warms up. Top it off as needed. Then take it for a ride, let it cool, and repeat/top off as necessary.

Hope that helps you some.

Ok, I went back and used the procedures from installuniversity for filling the cooling system after a thermostat swap. It looks like it worked great! It looked like there was a ton of air in the system. Now everyting seems back to normal.

Thanks again to everyone for the help. Here's the pics of the pump and gaskets...
