Default Help .. ticking noise

I have a ticking noise that I thought was my pushrods, but I just checked them today and they are all striaght. I dont know the problem and would really like to solve it (its annoying). Could it be the A.I.R pipe gasket (sounds like it is coming from close to there on the drivers side)

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks
Greg

I checked my driver's side pushrods about a week ago when mine started ticking. They were all straight. I think it was just an exhaust leak. Check your exhaust.

It could be the gasket like you said and would be easy enough to change, a few other things to look at are air pump check valve, piston slap and if you have found any roller bearings in the engine oil it could be a rocker arm gone bad.

It seems to only start ticking when the car starts to warm up. I can hear it better from the bottom of the bottom of hte car also.

Any opinions on this????
1. Pushrods are straight
2. Vapor valve is fine
3. A.I.R. gaskets are fine
4. Spark Plugs are all tight

You can at least illiminate a tapping fuel vapor purge valve by doing the following:
_____________________________________________

I have posted this many times before. If you have a tapping sound, piston slap is a very good possibility, but before you convince yourself that you indeed have piston slap, bent pushrods, noisy injectors, etc, at least try this first:

Start your cold engine in the morning. After about 1 minute, does it start “tapping”? Tapping lasts until the engine warms up and then stops? You may just be a victim of the “Purge Valve From Hell”. Your fuel vapor purge valve is located right next to the #1 fuel injector. That’s the most forward injector on the driver’s side. One of the hoses that are wrapped in silver tape mounts to this valve.

Now that you have identified the purge valve, start your [cold] engine and let it idle. As soon as the tapping sound starts, unhook the electrical connector to the valve (while engine is still idling).

If the tapping sound stops, you have found the problem. Your warranty will replace the valve, but it’s just a crapshoot whether you get a quiet one or not. If you are not under warranty, I believe the valve costs under $35.

I have had the same exact problem ever since I installed my headers. I hear a loud ticking under my car when it's warm. I did the AIR restrictor mod so it can't be the check valves. My guess is it's an exhaust leak from a cylinder. I going to pull my plug wires 1 at a time to see if the ticking goes away so I know on which cylinder the leak is on. If this doesn't work, then I have no idea.

I have the same problem....

From what I've been able to determine, it's 1 of the following:

1. piston slap
2. lifter problem
3. exhaust leak

I believe it's an exhaust leak..... when i life the car up I can see/feel the exhaust leak at the y-pipe (from having my trans dropped 3 or 4 times)

I had a similar ticking noise from the passenger side of my car, didnt start making noise until the car was warm. I starting unplugging injectors one at a time and i found one that, when unplugged, the noise went away. It was on #6 cyl... And i figured it didnt make noise until the injector itself was warmed up... I did an OTC fuel injector cleaning.. feed through the fuel rail, disable the fuel pump.. and the noise went dramatically down. However, im still planning to replace all my injectors soon.

The ticking noise you get is when a cylinder fires and the gas leaks before it reaches the primaries. Getting a leak at the y-pipe isn't that bad. Just kinda like running a smaller cut out.

It's coming from the front drivers side. I had the car on jackstands last night and I could hear it real well from underneath. Then I popped the hood and it was just as loud from there. The ticking used to be less noticable when the car warmed up, but now it seems like I notice it all the time. Definitely not as loud though as when I first turn on the car. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but could this cause the car to run lean?? I dyno'd 2 weeks ago and my car is running very lean.

Thanks!
Priscilla

Keep in mind that the injectors are quitem noisy and are right on top where it makes them even louder. Piston slap is a more metallic, deeper sound that usually goes away after warm-up.

Thanks Kimchee and Rice for the info. I too have that problem on my car when it's cold, I'll give that a try.

it's possible that there is an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold. I have the same problem on my truck and my mechanic told me that when its cold it will leak until it warms up because the manifold expands and contracts causing it to close up and not tick. So based on that, I would try tightening your exhaust manifold bolts or replace the gaskets.

Another possible idea is loose spark plug..especially possible with number eight or number six..The ls1 is pretty famous for some ticking noises even when warm..mine is pretty loud on passenger side when you put ear down to wheelwell.no luck finding it on overhead even.
I did put in 10/30 amsoil which some said helped .
I mostly just ignore it now..have a loud stereo so pretty easy to do .Also if you have messed with gaskets on egr tubes or air tubes possible source of noise there.I have block off plates on my car..no egr or air crap.I will be intalling headers shortly so see if the noise goes away.If not well maybe get rid of it eventually when I put in new rings ,pistons and stuff or do a stroker or get bigger bore.Car runs fine oil consumption isn't that bad..

I know that tick! I have had it since my car(98)was fairly new.It is a very different noise from the AIR check valve or even an injector. I finally began thinking it was a lifter bleeding down too much when hot creating a hair too much valvetrain slack at idle. So I switched to Redline 10w30 oil. Guess what? No more tick! I had been running Mobil 1 10w30 and then Valvoline Synpower 10w30. Redline kicks serious hiney. Great oil pressure all day long even in ridiculously hot weather. Plus.. and I know you all are gonna balk, but I feel more power now especially in hot weather, when I rip into her. Of course if it's helping the lifters stay pumped up better and giving better lubrication that would explain the power increase.

You can tell an exhaust leak by the fact
that it gets louder with engine load /
throttle. Put it in gear + brake and give
it a little pedal. If it doesn't get louder,
it isn't an exhaust leak.

hate to bring an old topic back, but i recently have noticed my 98 camaro is experiencing ticking from the passenger side. I cleaned out my IAC today and cranked it up, and noticed a ticking noise. What could have caused this? i notice it when the engine has warmed up a little and then it seems to not be as noticeable after a few minutes of idling, but its still there. WTF???!!!
