Default Horsepower TV

Hey guys I was wathcing horsepower tv the other day and they has an ss, they dynoed it got their #'s, then they chaged 4 things with Royal Purple, (Trasmission fuid, oil, added coolant, and something else) then they redynoed it and it added 8RWHP???

Is this right? 8rwhp just for changing some fluid or was their some trick that I didn't pick up?

I didnt see that episode, but they may have switched from dirty regular engine oil to fresh synthetic engine oil (Royal Purple). This can account for a small horsepower increase, but not necissarily that much. Maybe it was the same scenario with the tranny fluid. Combined, it may be possible to see that gain. But the original engine oil and tranny fluid would have to be dirty, or the engine output high enough to make 8rwhp not noticable.

Glad you watched the show! The SS was mine, and it actually had fresh synthetic fluids throughout. I had Valvoline 10w-30 synthetic in the motor, and Redline synthetic in the tranny and rear end. Needless to say, I was surprised also that the RP made ~8.4 more HP at the rear wheels over the fresh synthetic that was already in the car. Tne 4th thing they added was some RP Purple Ice, kinda like Redline water wetter. They said it would help with detonation, and keep the car a few degrees cooler........WRONG! On the pulls they made after the fluid swap, the car detonated even more, but I'm sure it was due to the lack of ventilation in the building. Oh well, just thought I'd let ya know what really happened.

I did not see that episode.

But 8hp could be just from letting the engine cool down.

Hey man nice car by the way, I was so pumped when I saw an F-body on TV, a few times when I put that show on it had a ricer and would try to fool the viewer into believing it was a fast car, made me
By the way how did you get your car on HP TV?

Anyways, the way I got the car on the show was me and Joe Elmore have mutual friends that work at Holley. He called a friend of mine at Holley, and my friend recommended my car to Joe.

I am not saying the 8rwhp is BS but tests like those can be deceptive. For example:

My friend had a bone stock Z28 and it put 292rwhp down on the first pull. On the second it put down 296 and on the third it put down 298. So his car gained 6rwhp with no mods.

I have seen this kind of gain happen between dyno pulls on other cars too - including mine.

I still don't know why they keep running the dyno with the hood on the car closed.

Did Darryl know? Why didn't you spread the word man? I would have loved to see it.

Next time, have them put a "real" car on there, mine!

UnbelievabLS1 - great info. You said that you ran 5 runs each way - if you still have the numbers for all the runs I would be more interested in a comparison of the averages.

What was the average power of the first 5 runs with your oil and the average power of next 5 runs with the RP?

Thanks,

By the way, I saw the show also. Base on the data presented in this board, then if I change all the fluids such as oil, transmission, and rear end oil, then I should see around a 8 HP increase by using the oil they used.

I told Mr. Elmore that the car would dyno it's highest probably on the 3rd or 4th pull, so we did 5 runs for each, the before, and the after, and we just took the highest numbers from each one. Which would also eliminate what was said earlier about the car having time to cool down before the after dyno runs. If anything, the car was hotter on the "after" pulls then it was on the "before" ones. Feel free to ask any more questions, or post any more opinions, I'll be more than happy to oblige!

Cool, thanks for clearing that up. The show just shows one pull so you really don't know how many they did

By the way, same test (different car) in Hot Rod this month, gained 10 HP on a manual transmission car by going to all synthetics.

UnbelievabLS1, congrats on getting your ride on TV.

If those tests are repeatable, I would think RP should invest a lot of money making sure everyone knows it! That could be huge for them.

Also, I would like Horsepower TV much better if they didn't put a pun in every sentence. Let's hope they don't talk like that ALL of the time!

Actually, they're both kinda goofy in person! Joe Elmore seems like the real timid type, whereas Chuck Hanson seems like the cocky, arrogant type, which he is!
