Default OBDII Inspection in Texas

Harris county now has an OBD II inspection system where they no longer check your actual emission, but instead check to see if your OBDII system is operating properly.
1. I am assuming that O2 simms are working fine as long as I don't have and SES light.
2. I can run an ORY pipe as long as I get a place that doesn't do a visual inspection.
3. I plan on doing a G5 cam swap later on and during that swap I plan on having my PCM reprogrammed. Now, I have purchased Hooker LT's and was wondering is it possible to while the PCM is out being reprogrammed get them to:
a. turn off the O2 sensors (I'm sure this is possible)
b. turn off the A.I.R. system
c. the trickiest of all- still pass emissions after removing and turning all these things off. My real question is will the state inspection be able to detect my "tampering" with this sytem or will it show everything buisness as usual?

Finally would my car perform any better with the A.I.R. system removed? I know under the hood would look better. Any ideas on this?
By the way I have a 2001 Formula M6.

If you delete emission tests or DTCs in the PCM that are related to emissions you will fail the OBDII scan. You are, however, allowed 1 "missing" code/test for '01 and up and 2 for '96 to '00. I think O2 simms will be ok as long as they don’t do a visual. I can't see how they can detect O2 sims as long as the O2 codes and/or tests are not turned off.

I don't think that codes unrelated to emissions will fail you. If they don't trigger a MIL then I think you will be ok. For example, those of us with vacuum modulated auto transmissions are getting a P0748 code. It is a trans code that does not trigger a light. I don't see how they can fail you for a transmission code...

i contacted a local shop and asked about this. They told me that they have "turned these things off" and passed the OBD II test successfully. this is a very well know company and if they say it works- then I don't see a problem. Goodbye rear o2's and AIR system!

You can turn the MIL light off, but be sure NOT to turn the test off. If you turn the test off you will fail the scan because it will read incomplete.

Just tell them to set up the MIL type as a Type X = off, but leave the test toggled “on”. That should work.

Whoever told you this is wrong. I’ve had sims for a year now, never got any codes with them. I've known many other guys with sims and no codes also...

I am also looking into this, and my thoughts are as follows:

- if you have cats, run the rear O2 sensors just like you're supposed to. You'll need 'em if some wiseguy decides to do a visual anyhow.

- fab a block off plate for the AIR and shortbelt it when not getting inspected. When inspection time rolls around again, hook it up like you're supposed to.

- if you MUST disable one parameter when getting the ECU reprogrammed, make it EGR.

- make sure your idle is set under 1kRPM.
